New to us 2017 FFH-- Wrench icon came on and DTE issue.

Recommended Posts

Hello,

We recently got a new to us 2017 FFH and we love the car but we have experienced some odd behaviors lately.

1st.

Over the last 2 weeks we have had a wrench icon randomly appear on the left screen. It does not appear to affect the drivability of the car but it has caused some other strange things. Usually when we turn the car on by the dash button I will see the icon light up, when that happens I notice the ac is off, instrument cluster and 8 inch screen brightness reverts to factory brightness. If I turn the car off and then back on the wrench icon goes away.

I'm not sure how it gets replicated to cause the wrench to come on but I'm not sure if I should take the car to the dealer or not as its still under warranty but I have no way to recreate the issue. I have taken photos of when it has happened as proof.

2nd.

I have seen and read other older threads about this but our fuel gauge & distance to empty appear to be way off. I read that the DTE goes based on your previous 500 miles worth of driving info and we are 1000 miles in but its still off. As an example, When I filled up a week ago, fuel gauge showed FULL and DTE showed about 320 miles to empty. We drove almost 480 miles and the DTE was 39 miles. When the empty light with 50 miles to E popped on, I drove an additional 50 miles and the DTE only went down to 39 miles to E.

when I filled up yesterday for our current tank, again we drove 480 miles with an DTE of 25 and with the full tank DTE is now 315 miles.

I figured it would of been closer to 500?

Am I missing something here? I am used to the DTE being off by 5 or 10% but not 35-40% considering the same driving conditions, same weather in Sunny Houston Texas....

If anyone has any additional info I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Did you reset everything when you got the car to remove the previous owners data from the calculation?

Most of the gauges can be reset. Typically you press and hold the center button on the left side of the steering wheel, while the gauge is displayed, until a progress bar completes. Try trip 1 or trip 2 first to see how it works.

I have a 2013 and have not driven any later models so don't know what changes might have been made.

When we first purchased the car I did reset Trip1 and Trip 2.

Trip 1 gets reset at every fill up and Trip 2 will be reset at ???? either oil service time or when it rolls the next 10k miles.

If there is a complete and total car reset that you may know of I'd be willing to try that.

Thanks.

If you have a wench light it should be taken to the dealer. You say it's new to you. Did you purchase it after the storm? If so could it have been flooded?

It was used but not flooded. Per what I have read its almost futile to take it to the dealer if the wrench is not on and visible. It is so random and comes up at the most strangest of times.

11-10-2017 UPDATE

I think I may have solved it. 3 weeks ago I was getting frustrated with trip 1 and trip 2 not matching trip distance vs just reading main odometer readings fill up to fill up and DTE being out of whack. I decided to do the nuclear option on this car and fully reset the entire thing.

I first started out by driving the car all the way down past 0 DTE. I proceeded to gas station and force fed it 14.3 gallons (Yikes).

I drove the car home (5 miles) very very gently and parked in my drive way. I turned off all user accessories and recharged the HVB till it was full on the display.

I powered the car off and went to the trunk to look at the 12v battery. To my surprise I found one of the battery terminals to be loose. It was loose enouth that without effort II could pick it up off the post without any effort. I feel that may have been the cause of the reset of the display brightness and maybe the wrench icon.

We went ahead and left the 12v battery unplugged and also unplugged the HVB. In total the batteries were unplugged for about 30 minutes.

Batteries were reconnected and drove the car in a fashion that I considered conservative lol. I reset trip 1 trip 2 and lifetime MPG.

3 weeks later there have been no wrench lights, no random resets of trip 1 or 2 or display brightness. We have been getting between 540 and 590 miles to the fill up.

dash MPG of around 46mpg and calculated mpg of 45. with fill-ups at around 12 to 13 gallons.

When full DTE reads in the upper 500's close to 600. (Last week it was 582)

We may break into the 600's depending on the cool weather.

Thanks for the help guys and check the 12v battery post connecter and make sure they are tight!
