Only one thing I dislike- auto dimming mirror

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else have issues with the auto-dimming mirror?

Seems like if someone is maybe 100-200 feet back, it dims - fine. But more than that, or if someone is climbing up your ass, it won't dim.

Very annoying- I'd rather have a regular day/night mirror (which would be on night 24-hours a day, I could care less who's behind me) - (comes from driving a truck, I lived by the side mirrrors).

Anyhow, is there anyway to increase the sensitivity of the dimming system so it will stay dimmed?

I don't have that issue (because I don't have an SEL)...

but it seems to me that the easiest solution would be to simply replace the "electrochromatic" mirror with the standard day/night mirror that the S and SE's use. it's $29 at teamfordparts.com. it should be about the same price at your local dealer.

you can probably get $100 on eBay for the SEL mirror ;)

Turn the mirror upside-down, so that the sensors get hit by the headlights behind you, before the light hits the mirror and blinds you.

As far as I can tell, the auto dimming mirror also houses the compass sensor, that bulge behind the mirror. On that bulge is a button with a hole in it, that points upwards, right behind the mirror. At night with the dome light on to activate the dimming feature, it seems to me that clicking on that button adjusted how much the mirror dimmed, I think about 8 clicks to where it cycles back through from brightest to darkest. It's been a while since I,ve done it, so can't remember exactly. Seemed to work for me, but I still have issues with the dimming of that piece of cr...! I also did the 180 flip.
