What's the procedures for a flat tire?

I notice that my FFH doesn't even come with a jack. I thought I'd at least be able to jack up the car, take the tire off. Find the nail, take it out, and plug the hole, then inflate the tire and put it back. Without a jack, I need to inflate it with the car's weight on? If my tire loses air in the first place, why would I think I can fix the problem simply by re-inflation?

None of our cars came with a spare tire and/or tools. Read this section to decide what you want to do. Many of us have created or bought our own mini-spare tires. Good luck!

The tire inflation kit includes a can of "goo" that is injected into the tire to seal a puncture leak. Then a trip to a tire repair store is in order. A sidewall tear however requires a flatbed truck to get it to the tire store.

Check the owners manual and you should find instructions on repairs of your tire issue. However, should you suffer a sidewall blowout, you're SOL and will need a wrecker. UNLESS ... you do as some have done and replace that kit with a donut spare! the linked thread is one of a couple here ... with (to me) a nice touch of all the needed part numbers - and pics - for a 16" donut in the trunk.

 

And yes ... this is my "Job 1" as soon as my FFH arrives.

No spare tire is becoming increasingly more common. If you want to build/install a spare tire kit, use the link provided in the second post. If you want to fill with "goo" and compressor, do that and then have the tire repaired/replaced and also have the TPMS replaced as the goo destroys it.

Soon after I got my donut spare (no tools yet), I got a break/cut in a sidewall that leaked badly. I was able to drive to a service station and they mounted the spare. No problem. I wouldn't be without a spare.

I have some 4 brand new Mustang take-off tires with approximately the same size as the FFH tires. Unfortunately, they are too heavy. I might continue driving without a spare, and bring one of the Mustang tires with me when I go to a road trip.

Just make sure the bolt pattern is the same before you go.

Wishful thinking but as you say here, many makers are doing this ... so why not drop the price by $200-$400 to offset the wrecker bills that may be in the future, the added costs of valve stems and sensors and goodness knows what oddball expense. Simply because a 16" donut could not be placed in the car?

 

And yeah ... for safey reasons I am sure due to HVB placement.

Maybe they should offer 10-year road-side assistance because of that.

Newbie (ford fusion hybrid owner), with only 450 miles on it currently, i maybe slow, but I wasn't born yesterday. I've only recently experienced my first flat on the interstate in a different vehicle, and after reading this forum, looking for customized accessories, I'm shocked!!!! Come on Ford, I just "spent" 38k on a maxed out spec'd car and NO SPARE?

 

I have not seen this posted and I know it will eat up space, but can a full sized rim with a tire fit in the trunk space at all? It's quite early in the A.M. for me, so I can't take the measurements and what not i'd need, but I am going to see if i can find an actual exact rim/tire match and slide it on the top of the HVB's....deflated if necessary.. the rest of the idea was, getting a capable micro compressor/power tools required, and a small jack. Then packaging them into the space provided for a spare.

 

Thoughts, and of course, being new here I didn't read all the forum topics i'm sure, but i've read enough in the last 3 hours straight to know I better sign up and give my 2 cents to find out some thoughts...

Many new cars, if not the majority now, don't come with a spare tire. You wouldn't need to buy a compressor because the car comes with one already along with the fix-a-flat goo.

Yep, I realize a lot of cars don't come with one, I just didn't really expect it was all...My own fault for not checking...As for the compressor, I hadn't looked at it, and thought maybe it was some "for use with fix-a-flat only" or something whacky. Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, but if the dealer did go over every one of the features at delivery on our complex FFHs, then they could easily spend a full day doing that and probably still not cover everything.

Holy crap! Bye bye wrangler? Nope still reliable wrangler to the rescue! I bought mine FFH used so it has aftermarket 235/45/18 so my funky roadside crap repair module wouldn't work. I had sidewalk damage a previous plugged (old school) repair. Yea, no Jack, no spare...pulled the foam thing up in the truck and as a sailor you better believe I was screaming every off color word. Luckily I was still at work on base. Building my own compartment with a full size spare will be happening soon.

Sidewall* and total deflation the compressor won't air up?! Read the manual...check. If the tire is caught before being totally under inflated then the ford authorized goo thing might work...but drive 4 miles and re-goo the tire? Just give me a freaking spare! And what's the rods on the ceiling of the trunk compartment?

The rods are part of the system for opening the trunk. Check out this TSB for more details about how the trunk works.

What does the "goo" pump do to the TPMS?

when you shoot the goo into the tire the TPMS sensor gets destroyed. In fact if you use the stuff the valve stem and sensor should be replaced. Thats (I think) north of $90 if I'm not mistaken. In addition to a replaced tire and all that other stuff.

Yeah ... that's why I went with a 16" donut. At least that is sitting in the well and somewhat below the HVB.

Waldo's point is that the car was designed and crash tested with no spare tire. A spare tire is rather large and rigid and could have a significant impact in a collision, even if it is in the well that is used for the spare tire on Fusions.

235/45/18 is a standard sized tire on the 2013 Fusion Hybrid SE with the 504B Appearance Package.

 

The Appearance Package 505B included the following:

- 18" 5 spoke premium painted aluminum wheels

- 235/45R18 All Season tires

- Rear deck lid spoiler

- Fog lamps

- Leather wrapped stering wheel

- Charcoal Black interior with Red stiching on seats
