Over-react much? (I direct that to the headline in the article) This is a system that you can turn on and off, and you can set your target at or above the speed limit. You can also just push the gas pedal at any time to go as fast as you want.

I like the idea of a car being able to recognize, read, and react to signage alongside the road. So long as this speed limiting remains an option that can stay off, I'll be fine with it. But just being able to be turned off isn't good enough. I don't' want to have to turn this feature off each and every time I get behind the wheel.

You can achieve the result by using cruise control and you are in control.

Sounds like a great system!! We need this in the Focus Electric. It's so peppy that I find it easy to go too fast in the city. Especially since I'm used to driving the Fusion Energi which is far less peppy in EV mode.

One of the things that I like about my Garmin GPS is that it tells me the speed limit and I glance at it frequently. This new system seems like it would nicely replace my need for the speed limit display on my GPS. As long as the car will still accelerate normally when passing another car (or other situations requiring a burst of speed) it sounds like a useful driver assist feature.

As CCalvinN said, as long as the option is to turn it on, I wouldn't have an issue with it. One article that addressed the speed when you need it issue suggested just push the button to turn if off if you want to go faster. I don't think so. And I wouldn't want to use the other option of having to floor it to make a speed change. Overall, I think it is a bad idea. My wife could have used it, however, when we took a test drive of a 2015 Nissan Murano. She got up to 92 mph without any sense we were going that fast.

I like the aspect of it. A more useful use of this is tying it to the cruise control. It would be able to adjust the cruise control speed limit automatically, combined with the adaptive cruise, set it and forget it takes on a whole new meaning.

 

OTOH those people who abuse the system and have had several speeding tickets would make great candidates for court mandated speed reductions.

FYI, the speed limit also shows (for major roads) on the nav display on the '14 MKZ-h that I have. Other than being in rather small font (for my 68 yr old eyes) this is helpful when turning onto a road and before getting to the next speed limit sign. It would be nice if you could choose the size of the font, within reason.

I just showed this feature to my parents the other day when driving with them in their C-Max Energi. They also expressed the desire to have the speed limit shown in a larger font. My dad joked that he'd need to carry a magnifying glass with him to be able to read it.
