Certain wheel/tire cleaners can damage wheel coatings

I found this out by reading a Pre-delivery SSM on a 2014/2015 Ford Focus.

Note the info about wheel/tire cleaning products removing material from PVD clad wheels. Don't use anything on your wheels with Hydrofluoric acid in it.

Some 2014-2015 vehicles may exhibit material transfer from wheel film/hard shell covers which may or may not be visible on the wheel surface upon removal. Cleaning the wheels is necessary to remove any residue. In some cases, residual material may appear to be scratches on the rim flange, but can be removed with the following process: Apply generous amounts of Motorcraft Bug and Tar Remover and allow it to soak on the wheel surface for at least 1 minute. Use a soft cloth andapply moderate pressure to wipe residue from wheel surfaces. Apply Denatured Alcohol as required to remove any remaining residue. Repeat process until the wheel surface is free of any residue.

Note: Hydrofluoric Acid, contained in some wheel/tire cleaners will cause discoloration on chrome clad wheels and removal of chrome appearance paint layer on PVD Wheels. Use only Ford approved products.

Hmm I just used some to clean the wheels on the MKT. Not my problem anymore, but good to know in the future if I get the Black Chrome PVD wheels.

I use 303 Aerospace Protectant. I doesn't make the tires shine but it does darken them up and it also provides UV protection.

Me too, it makes the material, rubber, vinyl, leather look like new, not glossy and leaves a dry surface.

Used it for years on all my black car surfaces, even the leather interior of my Mustang 'vert to keep the sun damage down.

It is not advertised so many don't know about it, I also use the 303 Detail spray, makes things super slippery, even the garage floor if you overspray.

Yeah, love that stuff! Used it on my Seadoo seat and (rubber) steering cover as well as the edge trim all along the entire vessel. Kept everything looking nice and new and kept fading way down. Highly recommended!

For those who don't deal with MSDSs or aren't familiar with them, they are Material Safety Data Sheets. In the U.S., the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) requires that MSDSs be available to employees for potentially harmful substances handled in the workplace under the Hazard Communication regulation. The MSDS is also required to be made available to local fire departments and local and state emergency planning officials under Section 311 of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act. The American Chemical Society defines Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Numbers (CAS numbers) which provide a unique number for each chemical and are also used internationally in MSDSs.
