Saw a demo of this I think on 60 minutes a couple weeks ago or maybe it was 20/20, one of those kinds of show. They masked the car so you couldn't see what make it was, but they definitely took control of the car and there was nothing the driver could do about it. It was pretty interesting and totally doable for someone with the equipment and know-how. Go to YouTube and search on "car hacking". You'll find lots to watch!

It has been done using a cellular connection. There is a known bug in some of the radios used for services like OnStar and SYNC.

I believe in our cars it's known as the Telematics Module. Automate is right. I saw people steering a car by tilting a cell phone back and forth as if it were a game. They also took control of brake systems, accelerators and other functions. All wirelessly. Edited March 15, 2015 by TonyHzNV

It's media frenzy. I don't believe anybody has hacked wirelessly into an unmodified car. The demo by a German hacker a while back was rigged.

Sync requires a cell phone BT connection for the 2 way communications, while OnStar has a built in Cellular modem. I would feel safer in the Ford with Sync than with the GM with Onstar, I can see those getting hacked a lot easier than Sync. As I see it, only those cars with Park Assist would be able to be steered remotely, though the Hybrid brakes, I can see that being bypassed on any of them. That is scary since the parking brake is electric, and wont engage if in drive.

 

With the Fords, since it only uses BlueTooth, they have to be within 300 feet of you to hack it. While that could happen, I know this because I was following my wife and my phone was paired with her car while I was in mine, the phone was paired to both cars, and I called her and freaked her out because it came on in her car when she answered, she heard herself come over the car speakers.

The Energi models have the TCU with an AT&T cellular connection. While CBS covered up the car it was pretty obvious that it was a Chevy Impala.
