2014 FFH transmission replacement

Recommended Posts

I'm experiencing a very similar noise as described in this thread on my 2013 Fusion Hybrid SE. Light grinding and thumping noise mostly noticable in EV mode. I thought it may be the electrical generator/motor. The posts on this thread are spot on and I've made a service appointment for next week. Hopefully the dealer will take the associated TSB and not waste any time in getting it fixed. This amazing forum has helped me cut through so many chases!

If your CVT does get replaced post your info so we can update this topic http://fordfusionhybridforum.com/topic/10342-info-on-transmissions-ecvt-that-have-failed/

To follow up, it was confirmed that my car needs the transmission replaced. They received the new transmission 3 days later and the replacement is now underway. I have a loaner Fusion for the estimated week it will take. For the issue tracking topic: my vehicle was built Nov 2012 and it had 40K miles when the noise was noticed.

I recieved my FFH after 6 days in service. After driving it for the last 3 days all appears to be back to normal. I'll post again if anything changes.

My wife has a 2015 FFH with 30,000 miles. The last 4 or 5 weeks the engine has been getting really loud. It thought maybe were just noticing it more since the weather is getting cooler and the a/c has been off. We live in a really quite neighborhood and as my wife drove off in it the other day, I was thinking it sounded a little louder than my Mustang. I took it for test drive, and I noticed that the noise would sort of spike up, like the engine was revving, but not because I hit the gas any harder. In fact I noticed that one time the noise spiked as I was taking pressure off the gas.

So we went ahead and made an appointment with the dealer, fully expecting them to say that it was normal noise from the engine. And I was preparing my counter arguments in my head for when they delivered that news.

But the dealer said a few codes related to the transmission showed up, and after a day and a half of the dealer communicating with Ford in Detroit they are going to install a new transmission. So the car will be at the dealer while the part gets ordered or delivered from Detroit, however that works. I believe the car was manufactured in October of 2014 and we bought it in Feb of 2015. I'll update the topic above when all the dust has settled.

For future reference the engine rpm is not controlled by the accelerator pedal. The computer sets the engine rpm to the most efficient rpm for the torque that is required to move the car.

Another early transmission failure. Has any body been able to find out from Ford what the manufacturing defect was? I expect them to deny coverage on the ones that fail after the hybrid warranty runs out. They said the Ford built transmission was new and improved over the one Aisin supplied for the 70,000 2010-12 Ford, Merc, Lincoln hybrids. Not so! Sad.

I have a 2014 FFH Hybrid with 100k miles on it and it is making the whirring noise took it into the dealer and they confirmed something is wrong with the transmission although they have no idea why or how and claimed it was like being hit by lightning that something would happen. Evidently the transmission is around $7000 new or $4400 used. Does anyone have any advice except never using ford again and getting a new car.

The C-Max's had a slew of the same transmissions fail. Ford knows all about this. When I had a '79 Old's diesel wagon that blew it's third head gasket at 8000 miles, I mightily resisted the urge to drive it on fire into GM chairman Roger Smith's living room. ( I hope I don't get censured for "flaming" on the forum ).

Got the car back last night with a brand new transmission curtesy of Ford. Total time at the dealer was 9 days, but only a one day job once the Transmission was delivered from Detroit. I haven't driven it yet but my wife said she didn't notice any engine/transmission noise, and she was driving with the window open. The service sheet said they "performed a TSB 16-0105 RR unit tear down and determined condition found all bearings on final drive pitted and case [dampener] damage.

I'm at 140k now, and haven't had anymore transmission issues at this time (knock on wood)

I have a 2013 FFH with just over 75k miles. About a week ago I started to hear the same grinding noise described in this thread. I thought it was front brakes (considering I haven't had brakes done yet) and brought it to my local mechanic. He said the front brakes were fine but he replaced the rears, then gave me the bad news that the noise was coming from the transmission. I brought it to the dealer after going back and forth with the service guy over the phone about whether or not the transmission is covered under the power train warranty. It wasn't until I read the fine print in the warranty that I clearly see that the cvt is a unique hybrid component and covered on the extended warranty. Anyway, they diagnosed it today and the new tranny is on order. They said they have no idea when it will be in and said that I can continue to drive the car while we wait. So it could be a week or 3 months or more as far as I know... he wouldn't commit to even a range of when it might be in. Also said that rental is not covered by Ford and that they don't do loaners anymore because it's too expensive. I said it's unfortunate that Ford is passing the cost of poor quality to the customer. Now I wait and hope that I don't break down commuting to or from work in the meantime.

Update on 12/5/2016 - The transmission took about 2 weeks to come in and, as of this morning, they have the car to do the replacement. Not too happy that I have to foot the bill for the rental, given that this is a known quality problem from Ford. Fingers crossed that it all goes well and that the new transmission is of better quality than the first.

Update on 12/13/2016 - Got the car back on 12/8 and everything seemed fine. The next day I was leaving a store and when the gas engine kicked on the car would shake noticeably and the gas engine would kick back off. I turned off the car to see if the issue would reset but no luck. Had Ford roadside assistance tow the car back to the dealer. The dealer did cover my alternate transportation (currently have a loaner) while they diagnose the issue. As of today, 12/13, the dealer has not informed me of their diagnosis.

Go here: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/ and file a safety complaint with NHTSA. They might not think it's safety but early second generation Fusions and C-Max's have had far too many transmission failures. Ford has not been responsible after the hybrid warranty expires and they should be. This is a large manufacturing defect. They probably know which cars had the defective parts in them ( bearings? ) but to my knowledge no recalls have gone out. Good luck.

From my experience you should be able to drive the car for 2-3K miles anyways and FORD payed for an new Explorer from Enterprise for a couple of weeks, probably put 4k miles on it. :) It would seem most people have gotten a new trans in a week or two. :) Good Luck, hope you don't have problems with the Dealer fixing the car if they haven't done it before. ;(

I have the exact same transmission grinding issues as everyone else. As I'm at 120,00 miles, my warranty isn't in play here. There have been 2 TSBs issued regarding this but both have expired. I just saw that a new one has been issued (02/21/17) but I can't find a number or content. If anyone can help me with this, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Sounds exactly like what just happened to me with my 2013 FFH 66K Miles. For how long does the warranty cover tranny? I read 60K (just my luck), but I'm seeing other things on this thread. Please help, thanks

I also had to have my transmission replaced on my 2014 SE.

Mileage was 42900. I bought the car in Sept 2014 and in March 2018 I noticed fluid on the driveway. I took it in for service and they replaced the left seal.

The next day the car was still leaking.

Took it back and they replaced the left axle and the left seal.

The next day it was leaking again.

So when I took it back the third time, they just said "We are going to replace your transmission"

Besides the leaking, I had noticed a very faint whine at low speed but not enough to make me take it in.

Now (Sept 2018) I have a "Stop Safely Now" issue.

I'll post that info in another thread.

I am also a person who is currently in the process of getting this problem fixed.

Stats: 2014 FFH, 96k mi, All recalls up to date.

Problem: Grinding/rubbing noise coming from front of car on deceleration (letting off gas pedal) when in EV (ICE is not running). This is usually when under 40 mph, very noticeable in town/neighborhood where the car should be silent.

Happens: Regardless if brakes are being pressed or not, whether AC/Air is on or not.

I am the second owner and bought in 2016. Luckily I purchased an extended warranty, but I am nearing the end of it (due to mileage, not time). I am within 1000 miles of end of warranty (sweaty face)!

THANKS TO THIS WEBSITE I was able to diagnose that THIS was the problem based on google searching for "2014 FFH noise on deceleration." Knowledge is power, and I was very happy to be able to have a rough idea of what my problem was prior to walking in to the dealership for service. Like I said, luckily I am still under warranty, because if I had to sell my car at nearly 100k miles, I wouldn't be able to get what it is still owed on it (another sweaty face).

I just dropped it off at the dealership this morning. They said that my warranty only pays for a rental for 5 days, so I settled for a shuttle home, and I expect to drive my (extremely poor MPG) old truck to and from work for the next week plus. I am lucky to have a 2nd vehicle, but I commute roughly 60 miles total per day in congested traffic conditions and my hybrid is my logical solution to sitting still in traffic: My thought when driving ICE cars, "my engine is running and i'm not going anywhere!" (hair tearing out!). Like my username says; i love my fusion hybrid!

I'm still waiting on the official diagnosis, but they said that the symptoms I was reporting do line up with the transmission problems that I found in my research.

I know this is an old topic, but I wanted to join and post about it (to return the favor), as this site has helped me so much already.

I will update when I get word from my dealer. Hoping for good news.

Ashley

Rehashing an old thread, but I'm the OP and wanted to provide a new update.

Fusion Hybrid has driven fine for the last 4 years, though severely under powered when going up hills. That said, we've taken care of it and it's been just small things over the last 65k miles. The car currently has 82k miles on it and we took it into Ford's Quick Lane for the "works" service late last week. Service adviser called to let us know that the maintenance was completed, and that the car was in immaculate shape, with green check marks across the board during their standard inspection.

I take the car home and I start hearing what I thought were squeaking noises as I pulled into the garage. My initial reaction, without much thought, was that the shocks may need to be replaced. I don't drive this car much, so I wanted to ask my wife if she's noticed this in the past. Before I get that chance, she drives it to the store that evening. She comes home and says "The car is broken, it's grinding metal on metal as I pulled up the street". Crap, WTF! I'm thinking that the maintenance crew must have screwed something up during the tire rotation or brake inspection, it had been driving just fine before the maintenance. We leave the car in the garage for a day, and then take it back to Quick Lane on Saturday. During the trip to the shop, I can hear occasional metal on metal noises, what I'm interpreting as either a suspension or possibly rubbing brake pad/rotor noise. We do a short road trip inspection with a mechanic, and the noise while present, isn't nearly as obvious as it was on the way over. The shop says they'll have their master mechanic look at it on Monday.

So the call comes in a few minutes ago. Not a suspension or brake issue. It's a transmission problem, and until they open it up they don't know what is going on. They're going to take it across the street to the dealer, and it'll be a few days before the mechanics can look at it. This is the same dealer that did the original transmission replacement back in 2015. I'll update the thread once they let me know what's wrong...

severely under powered when going up hills.

I don't experience that at all with my 2015 FFH. Lots of hills here.

The engine revs up big time, to the point where I feel like I need to back off the gas. I know it's not a normal transmission, but 2 or 3 people in the car, going up a 8% grade, and there's no power at all. I've got a 2016 Hyunda Sonata Plugin, no problems at all with that car.

From what you wrote, it seems that it's always been that way for you. Which sounds to me like something has always been wrong with your 2014 FFH. In particular, I remember one recent time in Palm Springs, three people in my 2015 FFH with my BMW-driving friend in the back seat, driving up the pretty steep road to the mountain tram when my friend remarked how effortless it seemed for the car.

2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid. Transmission seal needed to be replaced a few mos after purchasing (2014). Afterwards, it had a low volume whine. Dealer told me it was the battery charging. This week (2021) and one yr out of warranty, the sound got louder. Dealer wants $7800 to replace the transmission. Only 55k miles. Will attempt to reach corporate.

I have a 2013 FFH with a bad transmission 142000 miles. While searching for info I came across this forum, I would like to add some info to the transmission swap. I did it on jack stands and it's easier than you would think. Follow the Ford service manual to the tee and take your time.

The transmission is nothing more than a gearbox controlled by the TCM. I was told as long as the drive ratios are the same I should have no problems.

The trans swap was successful.

Parts I would recommend changing are

Transmission damper

TCM/Transmission cooler

Hope this helps.
