Dirty Back Up Camera

I picked up my FFH four days ago and am absolutely loving it so far. I've experienced a few issues that I'm not sure are problems, quirks, or just my own personal idiosyncrasies. One of these issues involves the back up camera. I've utilized reverse a grand total of 7 times so far and the back up camera lens has been dirty on four of those occasions. Dirty enough that anything in the view as completely blurred out and warranted me getting out simply to clean it off.

 

My question; Is this normal?

 

This is my first car with a back up camera of any type although I've been a passenger in plenty of other vehicles equipped with back up cameras. I've never noticed any other back up camera being dirty... certainly not dirty enough to render it useless. Now admittedly it's been a misty, rainy, sleety, melty few days. The entire car has gotten quite dirty in the 300 miles I've put on it so far. So again... is this normal behavior? Should I expect to clean the back up camera often?

The 2016 Explorer will have a washer nozzle that squirts the camera when you use the rear wiper washer.

 

Doesn't help you much, but there you go.

My solution has been to wipe the camera lens with my finger or glove every time I use the trunk. I do the same thing on the Focus Electric every time we use the hatch. Since we're in & out of the trunk/hatch multiple times a day this keeps the camera relatively clear & useable.

Our Focus Electric is also worse than the Fusion. It's all about aerodynamics.

What a great idea!! I hope it's a high pressure spray to clean the gunk off.

Darn. I was hoping there would be the 'Oh you just have to do this!' solution to keeping it clear.

 

Sadly I don't get in the trunk of my car all that often (in the hatch when I had my focus). I don't even park at home in a position that lets me have easy access to the rear. I'll just have to remember to clean it at work I guess.

It rains a lot in Vancouver at this time of the year. I've just gotten used to the camera fogging up as a result. My side mirrors and reverse sensing system still work even when that happens though... so not a real problem.

 

I think this issue will happen with any car not just the FFH.

Get the aftermarket backup camera cleansing system. It consists of a little bitty teeny tiny wiper blade and washer that cleans the gunk off your lens at the push of a little bitty teeny tiny button on your dash. ;)

When it's damp out, mine is blurred, but once everything dries out, it produces a clear image again. I've never felt the need to wipe the lens. Of course, I go over it when I wash the car, but unfortunately, that doesn't happen often enough.
