Does the dealer have to program key fobs?

I lost one of my two key fobs to my 2014 push button start FFH Titanium. I am waiting to receive a used one that I purchased off of ebay. Can I program it or do I need to take it to the dealer?

Take it to a dealer. The procedure in the Owner's Manual requires two good fobs to program a third. I was never successful at getting the procedure to work. Additionally the lost fob needs to be erased from the key memory. Only the dealer can do that. Take both keys with you. After they erase the key memory both keys will then be programmed in.

I complained through FordService that the procedure in the Owner's Manual did not work. Ford contacted my dealer and told them to program the third key free of charge. Maybe they agreed because I bought the car there.

 

Getting a lost key replaced is probably not going to happen for free.

I have had no luck at getting an eBay fob programmed. The next time I am at the dealer, I will have them do it.

When I got the MKT I had kept one of the Ford keys from the Flex. I could not program it by the manual either, but the dealer did it for me as part of the service when they replaced the third row seat that broke. They had it done in 10 minutes.

I'm pretty sure key programming is a profit center for most dealer service depts. and it doesn't require a highly skilled technician to perform.
