From BMW to Fusion Hybrid

Trading in a 2010 BMW 335 ixDrive coupe to a 2015 Titanium. We will be taking delivery in mid February. I will be reading a lot before then. We are going from 20 mpg in town and 28 on the highway and well over 330 hp to the Fusion. A whole new way of driving. I hope I won't miss the all wheel drive and horsepower.

You won't. I have owned Corvettes for over 35 years (still have 2). I find the Fusion HyTi to be probably the best driving experience I have ever had (except maybe the drivein theaters in the 60's :) ). This car has power, though not like your hotrod or a Corvette, but it does have an addicting effect that is hard to explain. I have become "one" with this car more than any car I have owned.

When you go from a car like a BMW to something like a FFH, you don't lose the enthusiasm for driving, you just transfer it to a different driving goal. If you want to speed, the FFH is no slouch, but you won't be realizing the full advantage of it's technology. If you shift your priorities, however, you will become addicted to a whole new kind of driving experience.

I didn't have a 330hp BMW, but I did have a 2005 Subaru Legacy GT (turbo) that was good-handling, powerful, and got about the same mpg as your BMW. I replaced it with my 2015 FFH a bit less than two months ago. I find that it has as much power as I used in my Subaru 90% of the time, and has "easy power" for moderate acceleration similar to what I enjoyed in my Subaru. I got used to it very quickly. I'm enjoying the more "refined"(for lack of a better word) driving experience while getting 45 mpg in my normal driving. The only thing I'm not yet used to is the larger size of the car; I'd prefer a bit smaller car.

I have had our BMW on the Kansas Speedway track at 155 mph. That was the only time I have had it in excess of 100. As it is known as a self proclaimed "Ultimate Driving Machine" I could say...yes...as an ultimate owner machine...unless you have a personal mechanic on staff and deep pockets after your warranty is up...not so much. I hope, with the complexity of the Fusion, that I won't be saying the same thing. I will purchase an extended warranty.

We early adopters worked out most of the kinks for you, the new models seem to be pretty stable vehicles.

 

If you decide on an extended warranty they are cheaper before the car reaches 1 year old and 12,000 miles.

Many of us shopped around and bought the ESP from Flood Ford, right from their website. Check prices before you buy, your Dealer will probably be the highest.

I noticed that Consumer Reports has now added the FFH to the "Recommended" list, this is a change from last year. They show the 2013 reliability as worse than average, but the 2014 is improved to better than average. Personally, I have found my 2013 to be very reliable. The only problem I've had is a recurring problem with the SYNC Voice Command button. They fixed it 3x, the last time seems to have done the trick.

The lower reliability ratings are almost entirely due to the MFT, some of the software upgrades and maybe the 12 vdc batteries. The basic operation of all the FFH vehicles from 2010 on is very good and should remain so barring some major glitch. The Ford-Toyota eCVT vehicles seem to be lasting a long time. There's not much to wear out

I traded in a 2008 Fusion SEL V6 AWD. Can't hold a handle to the 335i xDrive, but it did have great handling and the 221 hp V6 was no slouch and fun to drive.

 

You won't miss the all-wheel-drive if you aren't into tight cornering and don't drive the FFH in a manner it wasn't meant for (i.e. sports car style driving). If you are concerned about winter weather, a set of good tires makes far more of a difference than AWD does (I speak from experience - 2WD with winter tires >>>> AWD without).

 

As for horsepower, I won't even try to defend the FFH when it's being compared to a BMW, haha. But I can say that it's adequate for quickly getting to the speed limit when merging onto a freeway. You may initially be annoyed at the loud engine when you step hard (I certainly was), but just remind yourself that it's the side effect of the Atkinson cycle + CVT giving you killer mileage! Once you get to cruising speed, it'll be absolute silence, which more than makes up for it.

 

One place where you'll definitely feel at home as a former BMW owner is the interior luxury, especially since you got the Titanium model. The ride's smooth, the leather is comfortable, and the leather-wrapped wheel and shifter add a lot of "class". I have sat in my fair share of luxury cars from a Lexus LS to a BMW 4 series to a Mercedes ML class, and I can say that interior-wise, the FFH can compete with most of these luxury rides except the flagship sedans (LS, 7 series, etc). Plus, you get spoiled with an incredible amount of cabin tech while still having a price equal to that of a base model BMW!

With my T having 365 HP and AWD, it has a neck snapping acceleration when its used, however, I find I drive it no different than I drive the HyTi. I find the shifting of gears annoying. I guess after driving a CVT now for a good 7+ years, I am so used to a steady hum that the wind up of the ICE through the gears annoys me.

 

The Hybrid will be a totally new experience for you and once you get into it, you will wonder why you ever drove the other car! Of course its always nice to have a second car that you need a G-suit to drive, but for daily 100 Mile round trips, the FFH is the Premium car to do it in.

Our second car is a 2010 Harley Davidson TriGlide trike. It has enough neck snapping torque with the modifications I have made to it. It also approaches 40mpg when driven sanely...(whenever THAT happens) :)

I had been eyeballing trikes for a while, until I found out what they cost. For the price of one, that can only be driven in nice weather, would be better to spend it on something like a Stang or Vette. The ones I looked at used ran upwards of 30K. Nice though, really nice.

Ours is awesome. We have ridden in everything except snow. I don't get very wet at all as long as my vents on the fairing are closed. We have ridden in temps as ow as 22°. Harley's are big heat pumps and warm up quickly. Ours has a CD player, Sirius satellite radio, cruise, CB, passenger armrests, cup holders, and I can ride it all laid back and comfortable on our air adjustable seat. But...man oh man..that Harley torque and sound!

Yes, tonight we went a bit farther out than usual for dinner and parked with similar cars as you mentioned. Frankly, a casual observer probably could not tell the difference and the kicker was when I got home and looked at the gallons used for that particular trip - .3 gal, that makes me smile. I think I use that much mowing my modest sized lawn.
