FFH has a 14.1gal Fuel Tank

Well it seems it is time to talk to the Experts at my FORD Dealership Service Dept.. I explain what I did in this thread and they agreed with my conclusions, they would consider this a normal fill up and the actual usable tank would be 14.1 gal. The 13.5 gal. in OM is a min. value. :)

Your expert didn't say anything about "usable tank size" with a "normal fill up". You said your normal fill up was two clicks and that's pretty much what I did, so the tank wasn't over filled. I don't understand why you still arguing about it? ;) It doesn't change the facts, if you run out of gas and then do a normal fill up it will take about 14.1 gals. Interesting no one else has done it, so I guess I'm the only one with actual experience. :)

Just because you did it one time, doesn't make it a "fact". There are so many variables involved that a sample size of 1 test cannot be used to draw hard conclusions.

 

You said yourself that you had to do a "slow fill" to get that extra 0.8 gallons in, and I would argue that is not "normal" and not recommended by Ford. If you had pumped even slower, you would have got even more gas in, if you had pumped faster, then you would have got less. So how can the exact speed that you pumped be considered the only possible "normal" procedure.

 

The only fact is that the FFH tanks is designed for 13.5 gallons.

With the exception of the useful/interesting refueling information provided by Waldo this entire thread is OCD. Unless you are competing in the 500/600 "club" contest who cares if the tank is 13.5 vs 14.1? That amounts to ~27 miles for the majority of us.

 

Fill your tank with "no more than two automatic click-offs" (as stated in the owner's manual) when your FFH's fuel gauge indicates 1/8 - 1/4 tank left and enjoy driving your FFH.

Interesting you took the two clicks out of context. Here is the whole Paragraph on determining fuel economy.

 

"Filling the Tank For consistent results when filling the fuel tank: •

Turn the ignition off before fueling; an inaccurate reading results if the engine is left running. •

Use the same fill rate (low-medium-high) each time the tank is filled. •

Allow no more than two automatic click-offs when filling. Results are most accurate when the filling method is consistent."

 

Looks like I followed FORD's recommendations close enough. :)

As Waldo said, a sample size of one is just that. We know that the pump calibration and shut-off are two sources of variance, among numerous others. You have an answer, Paul, but it's not definitive (and due to these variances, likely cannot be). You've proven you can put a half gallon or so more than the stated capacity of 13.5 gallons (in a 16.5 gallon tank). Time to let this go.
