Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! Thanks for reading this! I am purchasing new wheels for my Merlot '06 Fusion S Manual and NEED TO KNOW the weight of the stock wheels/tires. They are the 16" steel wheels. I am deployed to the war and wont be home for a while and want to buy them now but dont want them to be heavier than stock OF COURSE! haha...so, if someone could help me out??....i need the weight of the wheels and tires together. If you find the info..will you let me know where you found it?? or if you just threw them onto a scale, thats kewl too! I attached some pics of the wheels I am purchasing...what do you think?? Thank you!!

Those wheels look great. I don't know that you need to be very concerned with an increase of weight as long as you stick to 18" or less. The increase will be negligible and is inherent to increasing width and diameter.

Stay safe over there.

Thanks! I will be safe! Well, I cant find anywhere on the net a place that says the weight of my stock wheels...but i do know that these new 18" ones are 28 lbs.!! and im sure my stock 16" rims are around 20 lbs...i dunno...plus, my new tires are 27 lbs...i dont even know what to guess the stock ones are...i just dont want to be bogged down...you know how much things like that can change the performance of such a small engine...especially the torque...because the weight of what is being torqued is VERY important to how much torque you have...if you have lighter, of course, the more torque will get to the ground...i just want to at least make it a little faster if im paying $1700 instead of loosing speed and handling...i am not rich...and i dont want to be dissapointed...ya know?? but ya, im going from 16"x6.5" 205/60R16 to 18"x8" 225/45ZR18...and the new tires/wheels together weigh 55 lbs...anyn more help?? =)

I'll recount my brother's experience:

He's got a 1996 Contour V6 that had steel wheels with hubcaps. He bought a set of 17" Mondeo multispoke wheels with Nitto tires off of Ebay. Says the car's accelleration has really slacked off due to the change.

Here's a tire weight database I found quickly: http://www.miata.net/faq/tire_weights.html

Looks like your stock tires are anywhere from 18-22lbs each.

The wheel weight database linked to the bottom of that page shows some example stock Miata wheel weights. This may not be of much help though cause they don't show any steel 16" wheels.

You can, however, guess-timate by doing a proportion from the difference between the 14" steel and 16" alloy weights (which are nearly identical). Using that formula, it's possible the 16" steel wheels are very similar in weight to 18" alloys.

Yes, your new wheels are larger, but they're of a much lighter material. Where I think you'll see the increase in weight in in the tires which are simply more material.

I believe the factory steel wheels are 22 lbs. I changed the steel 16" wheels on a Milan to 21.5 lbs aftermarket Borbet 16" wheels and the installer stated that the aftermarket wheels were just a little bit lighter.
