Trip MPG display

Is there a way to show trip MPG during a drive? I know you see it at the end of a trip and the instant is really not useful.

You'll probably have to use Trip 1 or Trip 2 for that.

Unfortunately not. That's why I reset the MPG display that shows on the Empower & MPG graph screens at the start of each day and sometimes for each trip. That way I get more instant feedback about my trip MPG. I reset trip 1 with each gas tank & trip 2 at each 1000 mile odometer interval to have longer range MPG feedback.

Are the MPG numbers all independent on the 3 screens (empower,engage,enlighten) or are they all one number? I've never reset mine since I've taken delivery and use that as my lifetime. I wouldn't mind resetting one of them for trips if they're independent.

Im trying to get the App "Torque" to work as a trip MPG meter, but it is around 12% off.

 

Seems that most of the apps that use OBD2 don't handle hybrid fuel management very well.

 

"Efficiency" is spot on, until the ICE shuts off, then it resets the trip MPG back to zero.

 

I'm banking on "HOBD" due to its dedicated hybrid screens and the developers abilities and fantastic customer relations. He will fix a bug if you report it and update his software in days instead of months or years.

 

I also need a better OBD2 bluedtooth adapter, as the one that worked flawlessly on my Sport Trac can't handle the CAN bus speeds that the newer vehicles have. Ordered the BAFX version.

Yes you can reset the MPG display seperate for the Empower, Trip 1 and Trip 2 screens.

It's all one number unfortunately.

BUT.......I'm pretty sure that the Trip 1, Trip 2 and "efficiency" numbers are independent of each other...,.so that you have at least 3 to play with.

I'm using Trip 2 as my long term record, Trip 1 as my tankful record and the other one to play with at various times within a tankful.

Yeah 3 numbers in total, but I believe he was referencing my question about the enlighten,empower, and engage being tied to a single number or being independent (i.e. 5 total numbers).

I wish there was a 3rd tripometer, it's nice to know the miles and time as well as the MPG. I use Trip 1 as a trip, Trip 2 as a tank, and I'd like a 3rd to measure the independent legs of a long distance trip.

Reset: drive a leg: write down the result.

Reset: drive the next leg: write down THAT result.

Rinse and repeat.

 

When the trip is over, you have a log of the whole trip.

A pencil and paper works in real time too.

Except that the trip MPG display in this vehicle does not update in real time! It only shows at the end of a trip when you turn the key off. (OK, it obviously does update in real time internally, but that info is not available) It woulld be difficult and dangerous to turn off my key while driving just to see what my trip MPG is at the time I want to know. Writing it down would be just as bad as texting while driving.

I think he was referring to Trip 1 or Trip 2. If you reset one of those at the start of the trip then you could see real time progress.

I think that depends upon which display window you are looking AT.

Mine has an MPG display that can be reset independent of T1 and T2 and it updates in real time until you reset it again.

 

The one you are talking about resets itself automatically at the start of each new "run" ????

Yes, there's a "trip" display that pops up automatically at the end of each separate trip (triggered by a start and shut-off of the car). See the screenshots I put in the thread I linked to a few posts back. I don't know if this feature is standard, or only on vehicles with nav... If it's not on the vehicles without nav, that may explain some of the apparent confusion here. Edited July 24, 2014 by md13ffhguy

I have NAV but apparently have never paid much attention to what happens on the displays when I shut the car OFF.

 

If that's the case, then there are at least 4 MPG figures that are kept.

T1, T2, the one that goes with the efficiency screens (resetable) and one that self-resets with each trip.

Only 2013 FFHs have the Trip Summary. That is the name of that display. You can get instant feedback on your trip MPGs by following some of the suggestions above.

By the way, I did find an app that gives trip MPGs. Its a plug in for Torque and itit is very closr to the FFHs trip screen. The developer agreed with my suggestions to improve it, and the next release will have the ability to save logs and kml files to see the trip on Google earth.

You're right! It's the Lifetime Summary that is only on 2013s. Thanks for catching my brain skip!! :)
