WARNING - Spare Wheel For Hybrid Doesn't Work For Energi

Recommended Posts

To prevent anyone else getting caught up in this problem.

The compact spare wheel that was found for the Fusion Hybrid, CV6Z-1015-B, does NOT work on a Fusion Energi.
It appears that the Energi has larger brakes than the Hybrid.
The CV6Z-1015-B wheel jams against the brake caliper of an Energi which prevents it from turning.
Guess how I know that.

Is that true for both the front and rear wheels? If it fits on the rear wheels, then you still have a good solution. Hope for a flat on the rear and if you have a flat on the front move a rear wheel to the front and use the spare on the rear (a two step process).

I didn't try the rear but the car has 4 wheel disc brakes so I expect the calipers on the rear are the same as on the front.

Could this be fixed with shims or is a larger wheel needed?

I doubt there is a single car sold on the market today that has the same calipers on the front and the back.

It needs a larger wheel. The outer surface of the caliper touches the inside of the wheel. I can't tell if the center of the wheel would touch since it's a solid wheel with no way to see the clearance. The 17" standard wheels clear the caliper by about 1".

A good idea but it doesn't work on the rear either. The rear caliper is different, due to the integrated motor for the parking brake, but it still binds on the inside of the wheel.

Is it possible that the FFE and the FFH have a different chassis? That might explain why I never saw any reports of the FFE having the popping axle shaft problem.

They fixed the popping axle by Job2, when the FFE was built. Would the FFE have larger brakes due to the added battery? That part doesnt make sense.

It's possible since the battery is much heavier. It never crossed my mind that a Hybrid and an Energi would be different. I "assumed" that the wheel that was found to work on the Hybrid would also work on the Energi. Not even close. There is zero clearance between the caliper and the wheel. Now you know why my ID on the forum is murphy. I never violate Murphy's Law. My current thinking is that the rotor on an Energi is larger in diameter than the one on a hybrid and a gas only Fusion. Measuring the rotor without taking the wheel off it looks like it is 12" in diameter.

Thanks for the heads up on this. It won't impact me, but I'm sure other Energi owners will find this significant. Maybe this should be a sticky.
