Is there a severe break in period?

So I bought a new 2013 fusion hybrid se yesterday with 55 miles on it

 

I drove it today and averaged 37 mpg driving perfectly (not over 65 on highway,100 brake scores, etc.)

 

The weird thing is that for a total distance of 100 miles, half a tank of gas is gone. Which really just makes no sense to me. I am wondering if there's something wrong with it, or if it's just breaking in.

 

Any help with this would be appreciated, before I go get my 6.0l 2500 Sierra with better fuel economy...

Nothing is wrong. It's winter and you are a new hybrid driver. Read everything everywhere about how to drive hybrids and wait for summer. There is little break in effect for hybrids ( or any other car ) despite what people or dealers tell you. Your 37 mpg is normal winter mileage. Fill the tank up and reset some mileage counters and start again.

...and also since the car is new, there is no history from which the gas gauge and DTE can pull, so it calculates very conservatively. So don't be surprised if it tells you that you are low on gas and you can only put in 8-9 gallons, as that happened to me and also to others. Give it 2-3 tanks for more history to build up and it gets more accurate.

The tank also likely wasn't full at the start even if the gauge looked full. It also likely contains more than 6.75 gallons when you see it at half. The gauge isn't exact. 37 mpg highway is pretty good for a brand new car. As you drive it more and learn about the car the mpg will go up.

Yea it's better already.

 

I was worried, because it seemed like I did a 100m trip on 7 gal of gas, even though my average mpg was 37 or so

 

Did my 100 mile commute today and gas bar didn't even flinch, went up to 39 mpg as well

 

Definitely like the car, was just in a state of shock from my first day haha.

No, I even called WeatherTech and they were not too interested. There are some brands that suggest that you can 'cut to fit' but that doesn't interest me.

I make do with a home made affair that I keep folded up in the trunk.
