Cross Traffic System Fault

Recommended Posts

2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid and am having similar problems. The cross system traffic fault appears intermittently and is more likely to come on in wet conditions however it has also appeared on dry warm days. I am sitting in a dealership now (using the free internet) and searching for a solution online because they don't appear to have a answer.

The service engineer read the codes from the system computer and has indicated that there were 6 different errors that occurred which may generate the "cross system traffic fault warning" so this suggests that there may be more than one fault to correct.

Good luck with the visit -- mine came on a few days ago, but understandably so since the rain was coming down and all sorts of road spray confusing the adaptive cruise and the BLIS, etc... but when that happens, next time my car starts back up all is fine.

After numerous hardware and software repair attempts to resolve my issue, Lincoln ultimately repurchased my 2014 MKZ Hybrid back in February and I'm now driving a 2015 MKZ Hybrid, without the Cross Traffic System Fault message! Obviously, Ford knows they have a gremlin in the system and continues to track it down. Once I invoked the Lemon Law here in Georgia, Ford bent over backwards to keep me happy, and it was actually a pleasant experience swapping out the cars. Hang in there, folks!

I still get these faults every so often, but they still work, so just taking it as the glitch that it is.

I am having the same issue with the Cross Traffic System Fault in my 2013 Fusion Energi SE. The car has spent 40 days at the dealership since February 19, 2015. The first time as for 19 days and the second time was for 21 days (and that one they delayed me bringing it in for 7 days while the talked to the Ford Hot-Line). I can reproduce the problem with regularity but the dealership has not been able to reproduce the problem (except for the day I am scheduled to pick up the car). I have told the Service Advisors how and when it happens to me but they keep testing it (overnight at a Tech or Service Advisors home) but they never do what I have explained how to reproduce the problem, so I will explain it here and hope someone from Ford will take it to heart and get this problem solved.

I start with a fully charged battery which gives between 17 and 22 miles of all electric driving. I drive about 4 miles to a limited access highway and then drive about 15 to 20 miles at speeds between 45 and 65 MPH. The "Fault" is always the same "Cross Traffic System Fault" with the Left Rear Sensor being displayed as the problem. The car is clean so it is not dirt on the outside of the sensor. I make this trip every other Saturday and it is very consistent (and VERY FRUSTRATING).

The dealership did replace the BLIS module the first time but that did not solve the problem. The second visit was a disaster. When my wife went to pick-up the car the "Wrench" immediately illuminated on the dash display when she turned the key and had to leave it at the dealership. The problem turned out to be the battery coolant pump. Each time after being told the problem was fixed the very next Saturday when I do the 40 mile trip the problem re-occurs. My wife and I are really losing faith in the card and Ford's ability to fix it correctly

Here are the dates for failure

01/03/2015 Mileage 11,565

01/17/2015 Mileage 11,678

01/31/2015 Mileage 11,877

02/13/2015 Mileage 12,043

In the shop 02/19/2015 thru 03/10/2015

03/14/2015 Mileage 12,456

In the shop 03/21/2015 thru 04/11/2015

04/25/2015 Mileage 13,170

Our last 6 cars have been:

1995 Mercury Mystique

1999 Mercury Sable

2006 Mercury Milan

2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid

2013 Ford Fusion Energi SE

The last three are still in service but we are not happy with the Fusion and the CTA system.

If anybody from Ford is listening please find a solution, fix it or replace it.

Since you can duplicate the problem, does it only happen on the same road?

If you get a system fault message, there must be a code for it also. Did the dealer mention what code was set?

What do you do that triggers the fault to appear? What code is being stored by the car? You can read Ford's proprietary codes with FORScan.

Well, guess this is another one of those, cannot reproduce, customer must be smoking something instances. I have a list of these myself after 45K miles.

CTA fault intermittent, no codes, cannot reproduce, but shows on VHR.

Transmission not in park when opening drivers door if there is a passenger with the second key. At least that is how I know what shows up cause it goes away before I can get in the car, yet there have been times when I open the drivers door and hear the chimes.

Regen brakes get soft, where I press on the brakes, the dash spins, yet the car doesn't slow like it should, have to press more and more until the hydraulic brakes kick in, hence low brake score. Other times the car slows aggressively on regen, just like it should, and again, no problem found.

Then there is then one issue I can reproduce just about every time, the regen brakes disengaging for a brief moment during a turn. Happens regardless of speed and SOC, and always when the brakes are in regen mode. Since no codes, no problem found. I notice it mostly while turning a 90* corner between 25 and 30 MPH, but have it happen under 15 MPH too, like when I turn into my driveway, and since it is gravel, it is really noticeable as the freewheeling when it disengages pushes the front tires through the gravel. Other times if the regen from above is not doing its job and I hit the turn going over 30 MPH then I wind up in the opposing lane during the turn since it lurches through the turn.

The last two items just started happening this past winter, the first one I noticed in December, and thought that it was related to the cold temps, the second part happened end of January, neither of these issues occurred since mile 3 on the car until I got close to the 40K mile mark.

Again, as what the OP is getting, No Problem Found! These cars are too damned complicated now, so you need not a mechanic, but a computer specialist and electrical engineer to troubleshoot them.

What do you do that triggers the fault to appear? What code is being stored by the car? You can read Ford's proprietary codes with FORScan.

There is nothing that I can list as a trigger. Warm weather, Cold weather, No Traffic, Heavy Traffic, Snow on road, No Snow on road. The dealer has not given any information on the codes; most times the response has been the codes were not relevant.

What is FORScan?

What Adapters are needed to interface to the car itself?

Billford:

Since you can duplicate the problem, does it only happen on the same road? That is is only road I have seen it on but it is the only time we actually run over 20 miles on a single trip.

If you get a system fault message, there must be a code for it also. Did the dealer mention what code was set? Dealer has not shared any codes (if they were found at all) [see above]

fpliptak,

Sorry to hear you are having these issues with your FFH. Having lived through this I understand the frustration.
If you have not already done so, remember to photograph each error message being sure to capture the mileage in the picture. This is your documentation of each event even if the service tech cannot retrieve any codes.
Also reach out to FORD Customer Care to get a case manager assigned.
From what I learned this issue is beyond the normal service techs capabilities and will require a field engineer to look at your car and communicate with FORD engineers directly.
Best of luck.

I was just thinking that there maybe something on the road that is causing a trigger, highway dividers, radio towers...

And I always thought that the cross traffic system is only active when the car is in reverse. But I do know that the cross traffic system shares components with the BLIS system. Confusing...

I have taken pictures (@ 65 MPH) each time it has happened. I have supplied a document to the Service Advisor with the photos and a description of the circumstances. I have asked that a Ford Rep (I assume a Customer Care Rep) to get involved in the repair / satisfaction loop.

Looked back at the Service Records and there were two (2) codes listed when it was in the shop the last time

Code u0253 with a reference to ssm44614 and code u2053.

No other information available.

I thought you had indicated that it happened at the same spot on a certain road every time.

I thought you had indicated that it happened at the same spot on a certain road every time.

Actually it is on the same road but does not appear to be in the same spot each time. Probably withing a 5 mile range but not reproducible. In any event, if it were something to do with the actual spot rather than the vehicle I would guess that every Ford vehicle with BLIS/CTA would experience the same problem at that spot and the CT Ford dealers would be overwhelmed with the complaints.

I have offered to have a Ford rep (Service Tech, Service Manager, Customer Care rep, Dealership Owner, etc.) come with me on a Saturday morning (or any day providing I can get off work) and see what happens.

My point is it is fairly reproducible but I am having trouble getting someone to drive it the required distance under speed conditions to see it happen. Yesterday someone drove it 39 miles but I have to assume it was not at highway speed the whole way because they would have had to exit the highway to turn around at 19.5 miles.

Today someone drove it for 4.8 miles. That is not in any way similar to what I see.

Sometimes I fell like I am wandering in the wilderness and no one can hear me screaming.

Venting does help but does not solve the problem.

Well we got the car back from the dealership on Tuesday night. They were unable to reproduce the problem having had it in the shop for 8 days and driving nearly 300 miles.

We drove the car today on the route that has consistently shown the problem but it did not reoccur. We plan to drive the same route tomorrow and see what happens. We will also do the same route on Saturday, which has been when we have always seen the problem when we take our dog to the groomer every other Saturday.

I do have a Ford Customer Care case number, thanks Meagan, and we will just have to see how things progress from here.

Well, we did our bi-weekly trip to the Dog Groomer's today and guess what! It happened again. It was further along on the trip (~32 miles) and on a different highway (I-95). This time I had a plan. I checked for Ford Dealerships in the area we were heading for and checked which ones had the Service Department open on Saturday. There is only located about 6 miles from our destination that is open on Saturday from 8:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. After the CTA Fault came on (Left Rear Sensor) I called my dealer's service department to let them know that the problem occurred again and that we would be driving to the nearest dealer to get the codes read. I then called the dealership and explained the situation to the Service Advisor and that we would be driving there to get the codes read. We drove to the groomer's and dropped off the dog, kept the car turned on (I have been told that the codes are not stored) and then drove to Hammonasset Ford in Madison, CT. The Service Advisor, Chris MacDonald took the time to come out to the car and plug in the OBD reader. He got the codes (310 and P1176) and said that the left rear sensor should be replaced. Additionally, he cleaned the sensors even though there was no visible dirt.

SInce the car was not being repaired there the dealership will not be being re-imbursed by Ford for a warranty repair but the good will shown by the Service Advisor is to be commended.

I later called my dealership and gave them the codes provided and asked that we setup an appointment for replacing the bad sensor(s).

So here is the latest list of the dates and times the failure has occurred:

01/03/2015 11,565.2

01/17/2015 11,672.3

01/31/2015 11,877.1

02/14/2015 12,043.5

02/28/2015 - Car at dealership for CTA repair

03/14/2015 12,456.6

03/28/2015 - Car at dealership for CTA repair

04/11/2015 - Car still at dealership for CTA repair

04/25/2015 - 13,170.9

05/09/2015 - 13.811.4

We did notice that the last two occurrences were after driving further along the route.

I just hope the dealership will actually replace the sensors this time. I had asked for that to be done the second time it was at the dealership but they said the codes they got did not indicate the sensors needed replacing.

I am hopeful but that is all at this point.

I hope that replacing the sensors will fix it. We got errors in the winter when there was a lot of road dirt on the car so I understand why they would clean them.

Well, the dealer replaced two sensors on the left rear of the vehicle today. The Service Tech then took it for a test drive and within seven miles the Cross Traffic System Fault showed up on the display. Even though this happened at 10:00 A.M. this morning the dealer did not call me to let me know what happened. I called at 5:00 P.M. to find out the status (it was supposed to be finished and ready for pickup) and was told that the fault occurred again and that the Service Advisor would have to discuss the problem again with the Service Manager to see how to proceed. This is getting really frustrating. Where is Ford? This needs to be addressed. I have a Customer Care Case open and yet it seems to just sitting in a holding pattern. Are they hoping I'll just go away and forget about the problem? It's not like this is the only time a customer has had this EXACT problem.

How do I get this to point where Ford cares?

So another two days in the shop. This is now 50+ days in the shop out of the last 92 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, by the way, according to the Service Advisor there were no codes found when the car was checked back at the shop. How can that be? When it happened to me 2 weeks ago a different dealership's Service Advisor was able to get two different codes.

HybridBear, the only problem is that Ford has some very strict rules about going outside the Ford Customer Care pathway. I am trying to work through the process but it seems to be very slow. This problem really makes the resale value of the car diminished. I am going to call and speak to the Service Manager today and then contact Ford Customer Care to try and push forward.

If the car cannot be repaired properly then I really think Ford should repurchase the car (and the accessories I had the dealer install before delivery along with the extended warranty)

The saga (sadly) continues.
