Major Flat tire

The lurch you felt may have been the traction control or ABS sensing the flat. The lights only come on for a second and you may have missed it. When you are deccelerating and there is a brief reduction of decceleration you might sense at as a forward lurch. The 2010 Prii had a situation with the ABS when going over certain road sufaces and things like grated culverts that was reported as surges but was in fact a reduction in braking. They did a software fix.

Can't they do a sandwich patch on that tire?

They could have plugged the tire but didn't recommend it. I opted for the new tire.

The thing I dont get, the ford roadside assistance covers replacing the tire if you have a good spare. Im sure part of that is for people who are missing there spare but came with one. But were kinda screwed since we dont have one. If the tire fails because of road debris, isnt that something where we would have to pay for the towing after they check it out at the dealership?

Last Thursday, I was driving home and the "Low Tire Pressure" light went on. Of course, I thought of this thread and what happened to fusionTX, and I immediately pulled over and visually looked at the tires - all looked good. I waited a few minutes, all still looked good. I drove the car to a gas station and found the right rear tire to be low (about 22psi). I inflated the tire and went home. Friday, all was good and I didn't think about it again. But Saturday, the light went on again while I was running errands. Again, I checked the pressure, it was still the same tire, and it was at about 20psi. I inflated the tire and it was good for the rest of the weekend. I brought the car in to Ford yesterday - they showed me the nail that had punctured the tire and was causing the leak. I didn't want anyone but Ford to work on it, b/c I didn't want anyone else to muck up the TPMS. But now, I'm definitely thinking I need a spare tire. I don't want a repeat of fusionTX's experience that started this thread.

Sorry to hear of your problem, there sure seems to be a lot of debris collecting on FFH tires.

Going straight to Ford was exactly where Ford Roadside Assistance will take you.

 

We have, for the most part, figured a few ways to have a spare tire and jack in your car.

Even if you have a service like AAA, at least you can have them install it on site.

Which makes me wonder if Ford Roadside Assistance will mount your spare in the field, and not just tow you to the nearest Ford Dealer.

The gas FF's have a spare tire, so I'd guess that FRA would do the tire change for a FFH.

I am curious if those of us who have had a flats are more on the Goodyear or the Michelins?

 

Mine are the Goodyears and I got towed to Ford. Now with the spare, I have some flexibility

at least. If at home, I could just put the spare on, run the flat over to my favorite tire shop

or Ford and then bring it home. A bit of a hassle, but maybe much better than waiting for

the flatbed tow truck (make sure you ask for that if you ever need it).

 

If I have the time, I might get flat bedded, If I don't have the time, it would be DIY. It depends

If you get towed to a Ford Dealer, they can repair the puncture or, if the tire is ruined, one would have to 'hope' that they can get the appropriate tire.

At least with a spare, or a full sized one like jeff_h has, you have a choice of what to do and where to go.

I suffered my first puncture in the FFH yesterday evening. I had been at the local community college watching my daughter take part in sporting event. We jumped in the car to go straight to dinner and within 50 yards the low pressure warning was on. Discovered a 1inch long 3/8 wide self tapping bolt embedded in the tire. Looking at the placement (exactly the middle of one of the grooves in center of tire) I suspect foul play.

 

Anyway i was able to finally put the tire plug kit I had purchased 6 months ago to good use (after advice from members on this forum). It was hard work to get the plug in but I was back on the road within 20 minutes. Tire seems to be holding air so not sure whether to take to local tire shop to get it looked at our leave it be. Any thoughts?

Good work, that was a dirty job but you pulled it off quickly!

The tire shop idea might be worth it, if just for peace of mind.

Thankfully it was not to dirty a job.Hardest part was getting the plug in with the plunger. The nozzle the plug has to be squeezed through was dry at first, so too much friction, by the time I attempted with the third one it was lubricated enough to go through, thankfully.

 

Going to see how the tire holds air today and maybe go to tire shop tomorrow. Tire held air overnight so looking good so far.
