How trusting should I be with park assist?

I was demo-ing the park assist this weekend and twice I was scared it was going to hit the vehicle in front of me so I bailed. Both times I had the solid beep for the parking aid and it was still cutting the wheel. There are warnings that the driver is responsible yadda yadda yadda, but I wouldn't think it should ever hit a vehicle unless I don't control the brake/throttle correctly. Am I right to assume this and I really didn't need to back off? Or is it probable for the car to not know the exact distance and make a mistake?

I tried it last weekend for the first time and I wondered the same thing!

Let's see if we get some feedback from people who use it regularly.

The only problem I've ever had with it is if I try to back up really fast, it seems like it can screw up if I do that. If I have a nice smooth backup speed it works every time. I do get a little freaked out when it makes the cut and think it may hit he car in front of me, but it never has. The other problem I've had is it doesn't work well when there is no curb, bit that's to be expected I guess.

 

I can parallel park fine without this feature but I love the fact that it can tell me if I can fit in a space or not before I even try to park. Nothing is worse than trying to squeeze into a spot and then realizing there is no way it's going to fit.

I've used it in many different Ford cars and many times it's cut very close at the front - much closer than I would ever trust on my own. But it's never hit anything, so I'd trust it.
