BLIS and Cross Traffic Alert

Well this is a bit strange. Starting yesterday I have been receiving a message on my dash when I start my car saying that I have a Blind Spot fault and Cross traffic fault. It appears to only affect the driver's side according to the little yellow light. The BLIS system is working on the right hand side but not the left. I have turned off the car and restarted it a couple of times yesterday and the messages still appear. The car is totally clean. I even tried rubbing the sensors on the left rear of the car to see if there was any dust or dirt on them and nothing.

 

I took the car to a dealer close to work to see if they can have a quick look at it, and unfortunately they were totally booked solid. I have an appointment with them Thursday morning. The adviser was quick to suggest that it was probably module that controls these systems. My question is since this car is only 5 months old how common is it to have these modules fail? I noticed by doing a quick Google search this is common on the previous models of the Fusion.

The sensor is a black box about 4" square, one on each side of the car. They are located under the bumper cover on each fender, and it probably is just a bad sensor. I dont know how hard the bumper cover is to remove on the Fusion, but on the Flex, which uses hte same sensors setup, I could have the module replaced in an hour. Hopefully with diagnostic time, it will be no more than a couple hours for them to repair it. This is my 5th car with Cross traffic alert and the first time I heard of a sensor going bad. usually its just moisture that causes the sensor to blank out, and clears up after driving for a while. I found on foggy days, moisture can collect on the inner side of the bumper and cause the sensor to be blocked. Happened to me when I got the Fusion SPort one week after getting the car when we were up at the Dells. Cleared up later that day.

Well I took my car in for the appointment that was scheduled to get the BLIS and Cross Traffic Alert system checked. The dealer worked on it for about 3 hours. No modules needed to be replaced. The problem was apparently the two systems lost connection to that main computer. (Not sure how that happened) but they had to re-flash the computer software to fix it. Everything appears to be working now and only time will tell.

man, these cars are more complex than a PC now! My laptop loses USB drives occasionally and has to be reset, so now cars are the same way. Ouch

I hope that little stuff like this doesn't happen anymore, it's things like these that annoys me the most (because there's no reason why it happened)
