Decision Made, Car Delivered

After a close-run decision between the FFH Titanium and the VW Passat TDI, the Passat was the victor. For those who are interested in the reasons, they include: more highway trips than urban driving, larger trunk, larger back seat. And then there's a difference in price of $4-5K.

 

Once again, thanks to everyone on this forum for all the helpful information and viewpoints, especially "acdii" and "B25nut."

Nice! Enjoy. VW makes great driving cars. Wish the price difference between regular gas and diesel wasn't so high here. Not cost effective to buy a diesel.

I was considering a VW as well, even test drove one. The tech in the Fusion and its looks won me over.

Congrats and best of luck with the VW. Hopefully you negotiated a good deal on it. I also agree with dalesky about the price of diesel weighing in on my decision to get the FFH instead of Passat diesel. Cheapest price here for regular is $3.45, diesel is $3.69.

My brother just bought his 2nd VW in one month, a Golf TDI for himself and (Edit, I just found out) Jetta wagon Passat (gas) for the wife who hates the Diesel smell at the pump (?).

The VW dealer was really dealin' he said, couldn't resist.

(His last Jetta TDI was totaled and his older BMW broke once too often)

 

Edit: BTW, he just put a APR ECU chip tuner on his '13 Golf TDI and has recorded a 1/4 mile time of over 94 mph, with a 0-60 time of 6.69.

The little 2.0 liter TDI engine is showing 186HP and 297 ft lbs of torque, amazing.

Still gets 40+ mpg easily.

As far as the price difference between ULR and ULSD is concerned.....just not that important to me when I've been getting 46 mpg on a brand new car.....and without trying, going 65 on two lane and 75 on the Interstate. As I stated, this car will be used mostly for highway driving. If our driving were primarily urban, that would be another story.

The deal was very hard to resist- no hard bargaining involved, over $4400 off MSRP, paid $29198.

 

Anyway, thanks again for a good experience!

I enjoy the smell of diesel. It is used to cut drilling mud when getting to higher pressure formations. As a wellhand, when the rig would cement casing in at a formation, they left this stuff lying EVERYWHERE in our work zone and we would come in with Gas meters and angle grinders and smooth out the pipe and install pressure caps. Funny to think (with sparks flying everywhere) that the only thing between me and a large gas explosion was a little bit of wet cement and water/mud. This mud got all over our coveralls and would stink up the washing machines for weeks, but I enjoyed it.

I still have a Kubota Diesel tractor, so get the pleasure of playing with diesel. I finally broke down and got a funnel for filling it so I dont waste fuel that splashes out of the container. Even though the tank has a large opening, it still hard to pour in to it. Now when I do my work on the CUT, I get to smell the fuel again. I also found a way to dispose of used motor oil. I filter it through a 5 and 1 micron filter and blend it with diesel and run it in my Bota.

My son's wife wants an Audi but she felt the Passat was a good alternative, so they purchased a 2013 2.5 model with 12,000 miles on it for $21K last week. On their 300 mile trip to visit us, they got 33 mpg averaging 67 mph. Not bad. I was amazed with how modern car assembly practices make many of the details of the Passat and the FFH so similar. The Passat is really plain Jane when it comes to style, however. My wife wasn't impressed. Seeing the Passat reinforced my belief that you really can't make a bad choice these days when it comes to mid-size sedans.

Commenting on this because it looks like were getting a passat tdi sel... So theres gonna be a MKZh and a passat tdi in the family. Who knows, in a few years I may trade the lincoln for a passat when the new one comes out if they give the options I want. Or i can just trade it for the other one whenever i want the diesel lol.
