2013 Air Filter Replacement

Here are a few pics and comments on replacing the air filter on the 2013 Fusion Hybrid... this is an easy DIY that can save you a few bucks over having the dealer do it, if you choose. This is probably common knowledge for a lot of folks on here, but I figured maybe there were some that could benefit from this and writing it so that someone with the car-knowledge level of my wife could read this and carry out the instructions.

 

Note - from looking at the Non-Hybrid Owner's Manual, it appears the filter location and filter type are different, so the below info/pics are not for those models.

 

Parts Needed - Motorcraft FA-1911 filter ($19.95 on Fordparts.com, $14.81 + shipping on Amazon, $11.95 + shipping on RockAuto.com... personally I order several air, oil, and cabin air filters at a time from Rock Auto to minimize shipping costs and keep on the shelf in garage for when needed).

 

Tools Needed - 8mm socket OR a T25 TorxHead screwdriver/bit

 

Time Estimated - 3-5 minutes

 

Step 1 - open hood and locate air filter housing. There it is below, is secured by 5 screws that can be removed with 8mm socket or T25 Torx. Unscrew each screw, but you can unfasten each one from the housing without unscrewing it totally and removing from the cover.

Step 2 - There are the 5 screws that are unscrewed enough to unfasten the cover from the air filter housing, but not so much that they are all the way out. If you unscrew each screw and the cover does not come right off, one or more of the screws may not be all the way detached from the housing. Or you can totally unscrew each one and remove from cover, either way works.

Step 3 - Cover should lift straight off of the housing, remove and place gently to the side to avoid scratching plastic engine cover. Also, there's the socket and ratchet/extension which make things quicker -- with the extension there is plenty of room to spin the ratchet around without catching your hand/knuckles on anything.

Step 4 - Remove the orange air filter and replace with new one (fin-side down), be sure to seat fully in the housing, as the above one shows before removal.

Step 5 - Place cover back on and secure each screw, and it's a good idea to go around once and fasten each one about 3/4 of the way, then make another trip to tighten them completely. Fully fastening each one from the start raises the risk of cranking one side down unevenly, so keeping things even is a good idea. I don't know the tightening specs for these screws, but once each screw is fully tight there is a definite difference in the feel and you'll know it's good.

Maintenance intervals on a hybrid are so odd...so many of the miles are electric only... curious what kind of change intervals you guys are seeing on your air filters?

 

I think the recommended interval for the hybrid is every 20k miles? I changed the air filter on my Energis (procedure exactly the same) at 30k and they still looked to be in good shape, but did them anyway. Mine currently has 62k miles so it's time to look at it again...

Any issue with installing a reusable air filter? I want to be able to just clean it and put it back in ever 10k or so.

 

Don't know... I guess you're the trailblazer to let us all know. :worship:
