We've been test driving various cars and researching them since February, and it was a close race. But yesterday we decided that the VW Passat TDI SEL Premium fit our needs a bit more than the FFH Titanium. I want to thank everyone who helped in the research phase of this process on what is probably the most congenial forum I visited...and I visited more than a few.

Hey it's a lot of money to plunk down, no matter what you get, best to get what really fits your needs.  I hope things go well, let us know!

+1

Since you mentioned the FFHF I was hoping that this community would give the edge on your decision. ;-))

Make sure you negotiate a good deal - demand for diesels in the USA is low, so the VW dealers are definitely flexible! I looked at one when my Fusion delivery was delayed, and the dealer was willing to do just about anything for the sale. See sticker below - MSRP $34000+ and dealer was going to let me have it OUT THE DOOR for $30K! If you want to, bring this post to the dealer if it will help you negotiate a better price!

With the quality of the mid-size sedans on the market today, there's very few wrong choices. I'm looking forward to hearing a report on the Passat from you two months from now.

That is also one of their best looking sedans and roomy, good choice.

Glad you found the forum helpful and welcoming. We all wish you the best with the Passat and hope that you will come back after you get it to share your experiences with us. I just saw another article today about how diesels can save ppl money in the long run and I hope you end up saving lots with your VW!

And I hope you will always treasure the memories of driving Saabs like I do

Good choice. 8 months ago I was set on a Passat TDI and my roommate was set on the FFH.

Fast forward 6 months later and he lives further away from his work and I live a little closer. The Hybrid was now my best bet and the diesel was best for him. Without letting each other know we both showed up to the house with new cars on the same evening.

This is an ancient thread but interesting to me because I recently traded in my 2012 TDI Passat for a 2014 Fusion hybrid. The Passat was a great highway cruiser, I could get 45+ mpg at 75 mph, but not so great with city traffic. My summertime mpg with the Passat was about 45, with the Fusion I am about 41. But since diesel is $0.20 / gallon more where I live, plus the cost of diesel exhaust fluid, the Fusion is about as cheap per mile. To maximize Passat mileage, I would brake very early to avoid loss of momentum, whereas with the Fusion, I feel like I can drive more normally, the regenerative braking allow that. The Fusion is quieter, I really like that. Overall I would say I like the Fusion better. I would have kept the Passat, except it developed clutch problems, and VW would buy it back for way more than I paid for it. I test drove all the midsize sedans, Fusion came out on top. Glad to be part of the Fusion forum!
