600 mile club

So since I had a 2010 Prius before this one.. I wonder why was I not getting the same mileage? What has Ford done differently?

 

 

 

How big was the tank in the Prius? I can get 600 miles on a tank in an Expedition, doesn't mean it's getting better mileage than my hybrid!

Forgot to post this back on Thursday night. I finally made the 700 mile club.. certainly impressed and here are the pics... I pushed it a bit further.. outside of my comfort zone and probably could have gotten more but this for me is good enough.

Got 648 miles on a recent tank, which is normal for me this time of year. What struck me was that 400 of those miles were EV! This wasn't anything I tried to do. It was probably due to being in a lot of slow traffic over the previous week or two. Also, I'm not sure how much of an anomaly this was, as I haven't paid close attention, but it sure seemed pretty high. Dash MPG was 56.7, so this was definitely a good tank for me.

How do I join this club? Two of the last three tanks were 617.4 and 654.7 and took pictures. I've never got above 700 though; I'm busy and have a lead foot.

I had a Prius C rental last November and it had such a tiny 8 gallon tank I had a hard time getting over 350 miles. It was all highway so was getting about 44mpg, little better than a festiva I had once lol but that had a bigger tank and was stick so had way more zip. The prius c was excrutiatingly slow. Was kinda scary a couple times out in the boons and at least one time had to drive about 45mph for 30 miles to get to the next gas station.

So did I. There was a lot of up mountain stuff and trying to keep up with fast traffic but that's about what I get in the fusion all highway if I'm trying to make time @79mph or so. I have only been on one long road trip in it.

Just got 606 miles with 11.2 gallons. :) Very pleased with the MPG, but had to suffer a bit to get it done. Most of the miles were on side streets and going about 45-50 mph. Also tried to minimize AC use :drop: . Brutal fact is, I did it with the satisfaction that it can be done. Waiting for the day when all my MPG are around 50.

I'm not willing to suffer to get high mileage. My best full tanks are with moderate temps, no heat and little AC, no rain, displayed 49+ mpg for the tank. More normal for me (more heat and/or AC, etc) is 46-47 displayed; less in rain. Lots of hills here. That's all fine with me.

When Miles to empty reaches 0 you should be able to go another 25 miles. BTW I tested the FFH tank and it holds 14.1 gal., how many gal. did it take to fill up your car? Good job! :yahoo:

So you went 33 miles passed 0 to E, Now that I think about it I may have gone 60-80 miles passed 0 to E. I thought the FFH would never run out of gas. :drop: At the end I was using a 4 mile loop so I was never to far from the Station where I wanted to fill up. I did try to keep HVB charged up so I would have good range in EV. When it finally did I was about 2 miles from Gas Station, but was able to EV all the way there. :)

ptjones So you actually drained it? Is that when you got 902 miles? Isn't it bad for the injectors to drain the tank down to nothing in any car? That's what I've always heard, but not just when empty but for the little bits of debris that could be in the bottom of the tank. I won't be doing this again (unless I am managing 60miles per gallon) but the best I've ever gotten is 53mpg but never could get over that. I'm taking it easy right now and the dash is reading 54 and since I am mostly aclimatized to the summer I don't need ac, maybe I can continue that for a personal best.

Here is a thread I started back in Jan. 2014 on fuel tank capacity: http://fordfusionhybridforum.com/topic/9610-ffh-has-a-141gal-fuel-tank/ and as far as harming the fuel injectors from running out of gas, I ran out of gas 6 times in my CMAX in the first couple of years I had my car and now I have 161k mi. and I'm getting the best MPG's ever. :) BTW when you run out of gas there is still gas in the tank and there is also a fuel filter to protect the fuel system. :)

I ran out of gas 6 times in my CMAX in the first couple of years I had my car...when you run out of gas there is still gas in the tank and there is also a fuel filter to protect the fuel system.

I literally mean run out of gas as in ICE won't run nor start. I once ran out of gas in my other Ford just to see how far it would go before empty and it took a while to get it started again after putting a couple gallons in it. Conventional wisdom back then said that having air sent through the injectors could hurt them or the fuel pump but perhaps on the newer systems they do something to compensate for that. Also, having a clogged fuel filter is a problem too. Changing those out is a messy pain in the arse. I know, I've done it.

As soon as the fuel system losses pressure the ICE stops, there is still fuel in the lines so after putting fuel in the tank the ICE will immediately start. I currently have 175k miles on My CMAX. :) BTW the fuel filter never needs changing.

Finally decided to try it... and made it! I'm especially happy because the driving was done at Denver's mile-high altitude... with occasional AC. Love this car!

I average over 50 mpg so far. That's mostly city driving, in summer, and I rarely use the a/c. So 700 miles can be done. I've been getting gas at about 600 miles because the car tells me to, and I miss the gas station.

You bought the wrong car if you miss the gas station. LOL :lol: I thought the whole point was not to see the gas station anymore than you have too. :) How many extra days can you go if you make 700 mi.?

Paul, I'm going to hazard to guess that he was joking. I don't know who doesn't hate the gas station. Once a month isn't seldom enough. I got another 600+ mile tank this summer but didn't think much of it to post it here. Think it was 652. It's always an ass cheek squeezer when the low fuel light gets in the red because I am still uncertain at what point I might run out of gas even though I never have in the fusion. I ended up only putting 12 gallons in so it was worry for nothing. The thing is I wish the fusion was all electric now because I hate gas stations that much, fithy dangerous places where you're exposed to cigarette smoke and a whole assortment of tattoed malcontents.

 

One of the problems I have with the fusion is the placement of the battery which is why I have a problem with the Energi. The battery should be placed underneath like on other electric or hybrid cars. I'd prefer a flat trunk and a hatchback model like the Mondeos in Europe. Now when I say hatchback I don't mean SUV or Focus like but like the old Probes or Nissan 240sxes had where the shape of the car is the same but you can get more into it. Ford seems to have confused that. Hope they don't do away with the Fusion or make it an SUV only model.
