Noob Question, idling

Recommended Posts

I am awaiting for my 2013 fusion Hybrid to arrive (5-9 weeks) and was wondering, if I turned the car on and dont drive (just listen to radio) how long I could do that for( I usually take 30min lunch breaks in my car) and if I am doing that is it wasting fuel? Or running purely on Battery/EV? Thanks.

You could live in your car for a week in air conditioned comfort with a full tank of gas. While parked, the HVB runs everything. The AC works from the HVB and a DC to DC converter keeps the 12 v system charged. When the HVB gets to a low level, the ICE starts, charges the HVB and shuts off. It will do this continuously My 2010 FFH burns 0.08 gal/hr doing this at 94º F. outside temperature ( in the shade). That's 9 days ! Hybrids are popular at drive-in type functions where their 150 watt 120 vac and 12 vdc outlets are in demand. They just leave the cars "on". My daughter got married last fall in an outdoor wedding with a temperature of 94. I left my FFH on with the AC on in the parking lot and took numerous breaks in it through the afternoon and evening. Wasteful? I could have bought another FFH for the cost of the wedding !!
