Lincoln MKC

My son-in-law has an Audi. Recently rode in it (in the back seat). Was very noisy, could not here conversation from the front seat occupants. Was also a very rough ride, could feel every bump in the road. I would never own one. My daughter has a Lexus hybrid. Not very impressed with it either. Will take my FFH any day.

The only major criticism is that the back seat room is a little marginal. The make or break feature for the deal is whether the luggage for four can fit in the back with three passengers in the back seat.

The Lincoln MKC and Ford Escape share almost all the Exterior and Interior dimensions, within an inch or so. The rear leg and hip room are almost identical.

If you want to know now how the MKC will feel to you, try sitting in a Ford Escape for sizing and fitment.

The MKC was a disappointment. It drives great but the darned headrests were a show stopper for my wife. She prefers to sit with virtually no recline in the seat and, even set all the way back, the headrest pushed her head forward, making her very uncomfortable. Removing them eliminated the discomfort, but I don't consider that an option. The reduced cargo area compared to her RX, along with rear seats that are difficult to get out of, also struck the MKC off her list.

The MKC's looks also do not make it stand out from the crowd. It's front and rear views are very good, but all others almost made me think KIA. For the extra money, the interior also didn't shout out luxury like I hoped it would. Now we'll probably wait for the new Edge, since the new MKX will probably be above $50K equipped the way my wife would want it.

From the start I didn't like the look of the MKC, too much like the Escape and Fusion in the design of the body and interior. For something they are hyping, you would think it would be something that would stand out like the Fusion did. BTW been driving the MKT the past few days, man is it nice to drive and getting pretty good MPG too, last fill was near 22 MPG.

 

I do know what you mean about the head rests though, my mother is the exact same way, no recline and the head rests do the same thing to her. She has an MKS of the 2009 variety, but she figured out how to make it work. She hasn't complained about them in the Fusion or MKT though, or the Flex. She did in the 2010 Flex and Fusion though, they didnt move in those cars like the do now.

The MKC has it's uses but it is too small and too expensive. I'm sure it will sell though, it adds bling to that market segment.

 

Owning the FFH for 1-1/2 years now and getting used to the SE's comfortable seats and quiet ride caused a real problem when recently I was looking for a second, smaller utility type vehicle to replace my Expedition.

I didn't really want/need another new car, just something with more Home Depot and people room.

We drove all kinds of used cars, SportTrac's, Escapes, the Edge and looked at older Mariners and some other brands, none met my wife's standard of the FFH's ride and comfort.

We'd get out from the test drive vehicle and she'd look at me with that look, nope.

 

Then we drove a used Flex, these seem to have a love it or hate it exterior design - but we liked the look.

With the full power, big leather driver/passenger seats, quiet controlled ride, 'transformer' power fold down rear interior seating, towing ability and all the other funky things these station wagons have, it hit all our needs.

We ended up with a CPO 2011 Flex with 25k miles with a Ford Warranty, my wife really likes it so that works for me.

 

No, it doesn't have the EgoBoast turbo's but it still has enough power, I am an Eco driver now, the FFH has changed my driving habits.

Bet with the EgoBoast after driving the FFH, you too would be seeing 22 MPG or so in one. I'm torn now between driving the Fusion or the MKT, I like them both, but the Fusion is just a bit more fun on the twisties.

This is day one of our little 1800 mile trip with the Flex, a gradual climb to 5,000' in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains. It's a quiet, controlled ride - smiles all around.

 

With 3 people and the Flex loaded to the gills we averaged 26.3 mpg.

Is that dash or actual? Either way that is impressive when going UP a mountain.

 

I took my T and trailer to HD yesterday and got a heavy load of lumber and drywall. the T pulled it well and I think it was getting about 12 MPG at highway speeds. Has to be at least 3K pounds being pulled. With that load the EB pulled it like how the 2010 NA 3.5 felt when empty. IOW would not surprise me if I did a head to head drag race, my T with EB and loaded trailer vs a 2010-12 NA 3.5 Flex empty it would be a tie. Really impressed with what Ford did with these cars.

I love the flex. But I just couldnt drive the hurst around. The local dealership here most of the ones they sell are for that reason.

 

 

I did see one for the really old handicap people as a limo at a casino tho. Maybe thats to prepare them for whats to come :P

 

 

When they redesign it (if they do) I very well could consider that one in a couple years. But I suspect ill be going MKS still.

You have it all wrong, the Flex is a Coffin, the MKT is the Hearse! Besides once you are inside it, who cares what it looks like on the outside! The Flex is a Very comfortable car to drive. Should at least give them a road test, especially the Ecoboost models, what a blast those are to drive. I love how they just pull up to redline.

Flex is like the coffin car on the Munsters... MKT is like a probe hurst lol.. Its ugly.. Not saying neither drives better and I'd take the Lincoln over the Ford in almost all cases except thus one.

This will be the last time I mention this shakedown trip with the Flex, we have traveled about 1,500 miles so far.

After the first days travel we crested numerous 7,000' to 8,000' mountain passes, stayed at our destination lake (at 6,000') and drove local between family cabins, lake marina and all over the area with the car loaded with people & things.

Today we crossed the width of CA and south to the central coast (near B25Nut's home town). We're parked here at the seashore for a couple days.

Overall trip mileage so far shows 24.2 mpg's on the dash (driving at, or a little above the speed limit, 75mph sometimes - A/C always on).

Not bad for 4,400 lb (dry) vehicle that is shaped like a brick (acdii's description).

In addition, it is real comfy for a vehicle that has 107V rated light truck tires.

Strange thing happened to me this morning, I had a lot of plans for getting some things done today, most depended on my tractor. Well halfway through job 1, the tractor 3 point link broke again, second one this year, looks like it bends and snaps, and after 12+ years of not having any issues, this happened twice. Anyhow, my day is shot. I took a trip to the Kubota place to get a replacement part, and had the radio on. This is the strange part, I could not turn up the volume, the MFT had it locked out by MyKey. WTH? After I got to the store, and found I had to order the part and no one was there who knows anything mechanical about the tractor, I got back in the T, and no more MyKey blocking.

Turn mykey off completely. Its a bug in the system if its enabled but not turned on on any keys it will act up.

 

Hopefully the upcoming update has some more good fixes and maybe running blackberry which ive talked to a sync rep and they have heard a few people say it is coming to the hybrids. (just no eta) so maybe it will come across the board to everything

Naw, I am just so off topic with this Flex business.

We got home today, the car performed brilliantly at all times, we are very happy with it.

At my age, chasing 5 of our little granddaughters around the lake at 6,000' elevation wore me out, I didn't perform as well as the car did.

 

Sorry to hear of your strange car behavior and other issues, who needs that stuff.

I just watched someone almost hit a new MKC in the grocery store parking lot. The back up lights on the MKC are so tiny that in daylight you can't see them unless you know what to look for. I would be apprehensive about owning one for that reason.

In my part of the country it is at your peril that you suppose another car will let you back out of a parking spot without running into you. I can't tell you how often my rear camera & alarm has helped me avoid cars and pedestrians. The person backing out has no right of way and better be on full alert before exposing his rear end to the crazies around here. With over 30 million vehicles in CA the odds are not in your favor.

 

I was following a new MKC two days ago in traffic and the tail lights are thin and long, in strong sunlight I too felt they were a little under designed. But they are attractive!

Do you have the Cross Traffic Alert system on your FFH? It's very helpful in these situations. It will even pick up pedestrians. However, the exact reason you provide is why I prefer to back into parking spaces. I only pull in if absolutely necessary due to traffic when arriving. Although, we usually park so far away that there's no issue with people being inconvenienced if we stop to back into a parking space.

Same here, I back into parking spaces 99% of the time for safety. It's not just to make exiting safer/easier - it also offers some personal safety if you see some shady person approaching you. Faster to get out, and if the car is backed towards a wall, the door acts as a "shield". I don't have CTA but I doubt I'd need it for this reason. Plus, with backup cameras becoming standard on many cars, it's actually easier to do a back-in in the first place! Of course, if the parking space is slanted at an angle that obviously favours front-in parking (more common in the US than in Canada), then I'll pull in... I dislike that style though. Also, fun fact - the total number of moves + time taken when you combine both entry and exit is typically the same whether you go front-in or back-in. Unless you're fighting for a space in a crowded carpark (a situation I try my best to avoid at all costs), there is literally no advantage to going front-in into a perpendicular parking lot.

 

I've seen only a handful of MKCs in the last few months. From the side they remind me of Audi Q5s and the front end is an improvement over earlier Lincolns. It's a shame they aren't more popular, but then again they wear the Lincoln badge :( I sat in one at an auto show and found it quite comfortable and elegant.
