Garden soil and 2x2x8' lattice

Let me first say I that this FFH replaced my wonderful Expedition, the do-it-all vehicle.

I therefore feel a trifle deprived in the cargo carrying abilities of my present cars, the FFH and Mustang GT.

Now that it is basically Spring here in SoCal my wife is into her gardening mode and I was sent on an errand to Home Deport this morning.

She wanted 3 bags of garden soil and two lattice panels, the FFH was fired up from a cold start (ambient 58F) and I traveled surface streets for 3.5 miles to Home Depot (44.7mpg).

Before I went into the store I decided to see what could be done to maximize the interior volume.

By golly, this this FFH is a regular Transformer, fold this, move that, fold this other thing, cool.

Pulled a drop cloth across everything and voila!

 

I got the 3 big bags of garden soil, put them in first, slid the 2x2x8' lattice panels all the way forward to the passenger seat, at an angle.

This left about 1' still sticking out, the trunk would not close.

I whipped out a bungee cord I had in the Boy Scout box I have for every car and looked for somewhere to attach it.

The trunk lid has a grab handle that allowed for the bungee, the lower trunk latch has a rubber surround that just moves out of the way and the bungee was secure top and bottom.

I golf carted back the 3.5 miles to home (45.3mpg) and unloaded, did the 'presto, fold-o' and the car looked like it never happened.

 

I don't feel so volume deprived now, this car will hold a lot of stuff with the rear seats folded flat.

One other thing to love about this FFH. ;)

It is almost perfect, if there was one more inch of space in that opening behind the rear seats, I would be able to fit 2 planes in there. It still holds more horse food than the 10 does.

I won't miss the 13MPG my Expedition gets in the winter months, but I will miss the size (I'm 6'5") and cargo carrying ability.I was concerned about my golf clubs fitting in the FFH's trunk, but someone confirmed a set will fit with no problems.

I think the ability to carry golf clubs is a huge deal, after all, I carry them almost 9 months out of the year. My wife thinks i am a looney for having that as a criteria.

I miss having the Flex for hauling my planes around in. I can only carry my smaller planes now, and none of them will fit through the seat back opening unless I remove the landing gear, which are secured with Locktight. I am going to install a hitch though and get an enclosed trailer. As long as I only haul my planes in it, the Fusion will handle it just fine.
