Active Noise Cancellation

Recommended Posts

When riding in wife's 2013 C-Max Hybrid this morning at 26 degrees noticed that as her ICE started and stopped the sound from it was barely noticeable. When the ICE kicks in on my 2013 Fusion SE Hybrid it generally sounds like a truck starting and stopping when driving under 40 mph. My question is if there is a way to check that that system is actually functioning? I am reasonably sure that without some type of proof or an electronic way to check my dealer will decree that the sounds from this car are "normal". I would appreciate any info I receive.

My FFH is very quiet when running the ICE. I would go to the dealer and ask them about it and to run some tests. You may want to see about test driving another one at the dealer to compare to yours.

For kicks I took out the family '08 Taurus on the highway for an hour running mostly at 80 mph. Took a sound check and the range was 80db to 90db. Mostly low 80s but depended on the road surface. Took the same trip, same roads, same speed, but in the new FFH and it averaged about 10db quieter. Something's working. Not overly scientific, but since the end results are all that really matter to me, I'm happy with the improvement. When I get a chance, I'll try different speeds as weather and radar permit.

I did a sound check in my brother in laws late model Corolla vs the FFH and found 10dbA down in the FFH. And 10dbA is a chunk of sound. 73db in his, 63 in the FFH.

mine is super quiet and i typically don't even hear it start up. I would do as previously suggested and take it to the dealer and ask them to drive another new one so you can compare it to yours and show them that it isn't normal. good luck

I really wish there was some sort of informative display indicating the Active Noise Cancellation status... We really have no way of telling if its working.

I hear my ICE come on. It's not loud but it's not whisper quiet either. It's definitely louder when I have to mash on the pedal on an on ramp.

What I've read about the Active Noise Control is that it only works in the 1000 to 1500 rpm range. It cancels out low freuency vibration produced by the engine at low rpms at idle or in drive.

Microphones in the headliner detect and measure the amplitude and phase of the engine noise sound waves. This info is sent to the active noise control cancellation module. This module takes into account the engine rpm to calculate the target frequency that needs to be canceled. This only targets the engine noise that needs to be eliminated and is sent through the radio speakers in a equal but opposit pulse that sums up to zero...cancelling the unwanted noise.

If this was true noise cancellaton for all frequencies you wouldn't hear your passenger speak, fire or police sirens or possibly that damndable front axle clicking noise.

I believe the Noise Cancellation is also active when the ICE turns on and would make some otherwise unpleasant sounds. The ICE is rather noisy now that the windows are often open in the warm weather compared to driving with windows up, but the noise isn't excessive. I think the noise is just noticeable since the car is so often almost silent.

Great explanation gkinla
