2013 door locks

I discovered how to unlock the rear doors from inside when they are locked, since there are no physical lock mechanisms. Pull the door handle, it unlocks, pull again to get out.

 

That's all fine and dandy, but, what happens if the car loses power when they are locked? Do they unlock when the battery is dead? I haven't looked yet, but is there a keyhole on the trunk to get at the battery when it dies?

No keyhole in my car's trunk lid, just the rubber button next to the license light to open the trunk when the car is in the 'unlock' setting.

 

Have you also inserted the key under the drivers door key cap to pop it off, then used the key on the bare lock mechanism to open the driver's door?

That is very strange.

After that I suppose one could access the trunk thru the fold down back seat to open the trunk and get to the SLI battery.

The whole battery system would have to be kaput before that arises.

Of course I have probably overlooked something. Hybrids are different.

The HV is only for the traction motors and AC compressor, the rest of the car relies on the 12V battery in the trunk, just like a normal car. The real question is, if the battery is dead, do the doors unlock? I know about the hidden manual key in the drivers door, but the rest of the doors are electric, with no manual lock button, so if they need electricity to unlock, getting to the battery in the trunk will be fun.

I just got an email from my dealer, they disconnected the battery in one of the cars they have and was able to open the rear doors. Works the same, pull twice to open it. Whew, thats a relief.

That is a relief. I often wonder about these things. I was in a new mini van recently and it seemed like the back doors cannot be opened until the car is completely off. Seems like a death trap. When I go to Florida, I visit Cape Coral, which has 400 miles of canals. You frequently hear of cars going into canals (some thru no fault of their own) and people perishing. It's a little unsettling to be stuck in the back of one of these vehicles.

If I wouldn't have read this thread, I would have probably never realized there was a button in the middle between the license plate lights to open the trunk. I just went to my car in the garage and was like "Oh cool!" LOL. I thought that only came on the Titanium with Intelligent Access. I realize the car needs to be unlocked, but still, it is an unexpected feature (to me anyway). Thanks for mentioning it!

You frequently hear of cars going into canals (some thru no fault of their own) and people perishing. It's a little unsettling to be stuck in the back of one of these vehicles.

I have attended many car immersions with souls on-board and trained others in underwater confined space rescue.

Believe me, it is difficult for even trained personnel to remain in control in this type of traumatic scenario.

This was a very good topic and I feel personally remiss in not bothering to check this feature of our cars.

I must be am getting old....

My Daughter, 7 years old, pointed out the trunk release button. I guess it helps being short at times.
