Cheap securilock SPARE key? (no lock/unlock buttons needed)

My fusion only came with 2 keys, and my parking garage requires one for emergency use (in case a pipe breaks and they need to move the car, and I'm not around).

 

The dealer said they could make one for $92. (I think he said it would be the fancy one with the integrated lock/unlock buttons on the key).

 

My garage doesn't need fancy.

 

Is there a cheap way to get a spare key without the integrated lock/unlock, that will be capable of starting the vehicle?

This ebay listing is for a plain PATS key that the seller guarantees will work. It's only $21. The listing goes up to 2010 but there's no difference for 2011. The seller is top-rated.

 

Just have it cut anywhere they do this and you can easily program it yourself.

 

That aside, I never heard of having to leave an extra key with the garage. What safeguards do they take to ensure that the keys don't get into the wrong hands? What do people with cars that have push button start do? I certainly wouldn't be buying an extra $200-300 smart fob just so my garage can have an extra"key" for some far-fetched emergency.

 

My daughter lived in in a couple of apartment buildings with underground garages and never had to give them a key.

The keys are locked up in the management office. There's a special sign-out procedure if the keys need to be accessed.

 

And thanks for the link. If I can get an extra key for under $40, that would be great. Spending $100 for a car I'll have for 2 years does bother me.

 

Problem: I'm on the condo board so I can't have the appearance of any special exceptions for me. Ironic: it's a volunteer job which takes enormous time, and I have to be squeaky clean.

I don't see any conflicting information here, all of it is correct. The first dealer "wanted" to charge you $95, that doesn't mean they "had" to charge you $95. They may be unaware or unwilling to use a non-integrated-fob key, but it's certainly possible.

 

It is true that you need the two original keys to easily program the 3rd key. If you only have one then it's true that it must be done at a dealer (allow I've read about some locksmith's that have "hacks" to get around this).

In other words, is $25 a good insurance policy in case one of the fancy keys with integrated remote gets destroyed or lost? (e.g. $25 vs. $200?)

 

BTW, how much does it actually cost if you lose on of the 2 original keys?

Hi Mike. :D Probably just a matter of semantics, but just so others do not get confused: The non-IKT fob SecuriLock key (no remote control buttons, just a SecuriLock chipped key) is not a "valet key". Technically, a "valet key" can only open the drivers door/passenger compartment doors and start the car (all that a valet would need to do). And in some high end/high performance cars, it can also limit the engine power and some other operating parameters to keep the valet from damaging the car.

 

For security purposes, a true "valet key" is cut in such a way that it can not unlock the trunk or the glove compartment door (if the car has a lockable glove compartment). In this way, an owner can store/lock things in the trunk or glove compartment and a valet would have no "easy" and/or legitimate access to them.

 

Unfortunately, the type of non-IKT fob Ford SecuriLock key you are describing is not a "valet key", since a valet would still be able to use it to unlock the trunk, so the trunk is not secure for valuables. The glove compartment is a non-issue, since it is not lockable anyway. And not to get too far off subject, but in our cars a valet will still be able to access the trunk anyway, using the interior trunk release.

 

Again, just a matter of definitions and semantics, but I want to avoid confusion for those who may begin to think the non-IKT fob SecuriLock key is a true valet key. It is still a great idea and cheap insurance to pick one up as a less expensive spare/third key.

 

My apologies if you already knew this information, but I figured better safe than sorry.

Hi Mike. :D To answer the question of "If I lose one of the 2 original keys, could I make a replacement using only the remaining original key?" - If you have previously purchased and programmed a third key before you lost the "original" key, the answer is yes.

 

You only need two programmed/functioning PATS keys in your possession to program more keys yourself. It does not matter if the two remaining keys are "original" or not, since once they are programmed, the car can not tell the difference between the two original keys and a third (or fourth, fifth etc.) added key. If you only have one programmed key in your possession, you will need to bring the car to the Dealer for programming of a second key (there is anecdotal evidence of some locksmiths being able to program second keys, but you would still need to pay them to do it).

 

So yes, if you lose one "original" key, but still have in your possession one "original" key and one aftermarket key (both already programmed), you can program a third, fourth etc yourself by following the instructions in the Owners Manual.

 

The key point to remember (no pun intended), is that once you program a third key to the PATS system, the car can not tell the difference between that key and the two originals. They are all just recognized as programmed keys.

 

Sorry for the repetition in my explanation, but I am just trying to make sure my answer is clear.

 

If you read the Owners Manual section concerning the keys, how to program etc., this is also explained in detail.

 

And just as an FYI for those who may wonder why Ford requires two programmed keys to be in the possession of anyone trying to program a third themselves: Requiring two programmed keys to be in the possession of the person programming more keys is an anti-theft measure. Think of it this way, if a prospective thief only needed one key in their possession to program more keys to your car, any valet service (or anyone who can get their hands on just one of your keys), could program a key that starts your car and later use it to steal your car at their leisure. And the key you left with the valet would still be hanging there, so no one would be the wiser as to how the car was stolen. However, by requiring two already programmed keys, a prospective thief working through a valet or other similar service (like your garage) must get hold of two of your keys to program another working key. Just makes things a bit harder for the bad guys.

got it. So making the 3rd key before you lose one of the originals is indeed a good insurance policy against a very expensive process of making a 2nd key if there is only one remaining.

 

Since my condo wants a key, and since it's a good insurance policy, I guess I'll do it if I can get the dealer to make a cheap key without the remote buttons.

 

Maybe I confused the issue when I may have mentioned the term valet, which from the previous post, isn't the right term. I just want a cheap key without the remote functions.
