Is your hybrid loud when you are accelerating hard?

I was just wondering if anyone elses hybrid was really loud when accelerating hard? It soulds it almost sounds like you I have a intake on the car!

It bothered me so much that I ended up Dynamating the drivers fender / fenderwel / wheel well and stuffing noise foam inside it too.

My car is no louder than a normal car would be. It's definitely louder than when not accelerating...but I'd say that's pretty normal.

In comparison to the more powerful 6-cylinder cars that I have driven for the previous 10 years, I would not describe the FFH engine sound as pleasant. That said, the sound note it emits is what I have heard in the past from 4-cylinders subjected to hard acceleration. On the plus side it actually encourages me to drive more sedately and optimize fuel efficiency!

I have towonder if what you are hearing on full power is the electric engine which I feel makes more noise than the gas engine. Both together is quite loud.

I came out of a Toyota Camry Hybrid so I'm used to the noise of both.

 

What I think I am hearing is the loud intake noise, air rushing into the box type sound. I found that the intake box port is in the drivers side fender well and I think it was resonating in that area making it loud. The dynamat and acoustic foam has helped a lot, I can barely hear the intake noise now.

 

It's was more annoying than anything else but now it doesn't matter :)

You want to be careful that you have not created any restriction on the airflow into the engine with the damping material. I don't understand the noise comments. The engine makes a lot of noise at higher RPM's as many small 4 cylinders do. It operates at higher AND lower rpm's than most engines. It's the nature of the vehicle design, eCVT and the Atkinson cycle ICE. I'm also hard of hearing. I try to limit acceleration demands to less than three divisions on the "PWR" gauge in "Empower" dash mode. Once acceleration is over the car is very quiet. The only EV noise I hear is a brief motor whir at very low speed.

The engine has plenty of room to breath :) The only way I can try to explain it is that it sounds like the window is down and you are accelerating when compared to the Camry.

 

Maybe that's one thing the Camry Hybrid was better than the Fusion on... Noise dampening? LOL

Yes it did, the ride was smoother but it didn't handle worth crap...

I think the intake noise is related to the Atkinson cycle ICE. A lot of charge is pumped back into the intake manifold before the valve closes on the compression stroke. The TCH may have done a better job of reducing the noise. Ford buried the intake down by the fender but noise may originate from every part of the intake air passage.

My car sounds loud when accelerating..The engine sounds like it is working really hard and you can hear it.. The only good part is that once you get up to highway speed the car gets really quit.

If you "punch" the accelerator the engine is going to make some noise. If someone is a hard accelerator kind of driver, then this is not the vehicle for them. Plus the MPG will drop considerable which makes the reason for buying a vehicle like this null and void.

I agree w/ Dan some. But there may be some times when you have to accelerate quickly too.

 

No loud noises here...but I don't think I've quite gone to full throttle yet either.

I do not think this car is any more "loud" under moderate to hard acceleration than any other 4-cylinder I have driven. Even the LEXUS hybrid that I test drove sounded like a cat being tortured when I was merging onto the highway.

 

To the folks who feel as though their car is making too much noise, have you considered taking another FFH on a test drive for comparison?

I think the noise is "normal" and related to the fact that it's a small (156 HP) Atkinson cycle engine. The Prius's are noisy too at high power demand. When you drive it so that it's quiet, that's when you get good mileage.

Ever driven your FFH in the mountains? How about merging into traffic going 65 MPH?

Nope, central NJ. Pretty crowded, but not to flat. No mountains, but merging all the time. If I floor the accelerator it's loud.

I was watching Motorweek on TV when they tested Fuel Efficient cars (possibly a older episode) and they tested the FFH along with 6 other cars? The only comment/complaint they had was the engine noise was loud! I see I'm not the only nut that thinks that way about the FFH.

Inquiring minds want to know (I can' believe no one has asked). How effective is your noise reduction attempt? Yes, the engine sounds terrible when pushed. I rarely do accelerate hard (once in a while when entering a highway and once to show my kids the thrashing sound).

It was a huge improvement and Ford needs to do this for the 2011's!

Maybe they did do something for the 2011s. I've had mine two weeks so far and yesterday we took it up to the northern part of the state up and down some steep grades on the interstate. I kept the cruise control on 70 going up a 6 mile steep grade. For anyone who has been to Arizona, this is on I-17 northbound. You go up about 3,000 feet in only 6 miles or so.

 

The engine got up to 3000 to 3500 RPM a couple of times and I did hear a louder hum from under the hood, but absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. This was by far the highest it has been pushed because all of my previous driving had been around town and I was taking it easy also for the first few hundred miles.

 

And the best thing about it going up hill with the hybrid transmission is no annoying downshifting all the time. My other car is a Jaguar and if I try to climb that same grade at 70 MPH it will constantly dowshift every quarter mile or so which gets annoying over 6 or 7 miles. The Fusion went up the hill as smooth as silk and the speed never varied off of 70. By far the smoothest, quietest car I've ever owned.
