Warranty Question

Hi,

I took delivery of my 2010 SEL three weeks ago, on a Friday afternoon. Sometime on the following Wednesday I discovered a crack (1/2") in the leather trim on my steering wheel. The crack is between the finger ridges on the back side of the wheel so it is not readily visible.

I called the dealer and they scheduled an appointment with the service department the following week.

Now, the dealer tells me that Ford will not replace the steering wheel or the defective trim. They would pay for someone to glue the crack.

Am I within my right to insist on at least replacing the leather trim? What if after a few years the glue came undone? If I were to sell the car after a few years, I am sure the buyer will knock the price down because of this.

Ford is only obligated to repair it. Let them repair it and see how it looks - chances are it will be good as new with no worries. If not then press for a replacement.

thank you. I will have it fixed and see, My only fear is that it will look great for two or three years then the crack will open up again and by that time I will have to fix it out of my own pocket.

You have a 3 yr warranty - chances are if it's going to fail it would fail before the warranty expires.

If it isn't a glaring defect, like a tear on the outer rim of the steering wheel, but a slit that can't really be seen, but felt, they will repair it. We had a 2008 Veracruz that had a scratch in the steering wheel from the seat belt, of course the warranty would not cover that, but when we had the radio replaced, the mechanic scratched the steering wheel at the 10 position, they had no choice but to replace it since that kind of damage can't be repaired.

It is not long enough to call a tear, but it is a deep crack, not a scratch. And it can be easily seen if you are looking at the backside of the steering wheel from the outside of the car. Anyway, I will let them fix it and see how it looks afterwards.

Hey Mtl Fusion, how's it going? Do you have an update on your steering crack problem. And since I live in Montreal also...who's your dealer? I was the first to take delivery of a 2010 Fusion last year and possibly in all of Montreal....still inquiring on that...it would just be fun to know...my delivery date was April 27th 2009. The dealer is Gabriel Ford-Lincoln on St-Jacques. They took the car for a day and had a specialist come in to fix it. I admit he did an excellent job. I can hardly see where the repair is done. I just hope it stands the test of time.

I haven't gotten around taking any pics yet. I guess unless I modify my car (which I doubt I will ever do) there is no value added in posting pictures of my plain-stock car. But I will take a look at your pics, maybe I will feel encouraged to follow suit.

Hey mtlfusion, what potholes? What part of town do you live in? I have driven in every neighborhood of the island or off the island and I have never seen any potholes. I have seen thousands of craters like on the moon, you know, but never a pothole.

 

I'm glad you steering wheel is fixed to your liking, I'v heard good things from that dealer, do you like them? So stay in touch cuz you never know I may have a solution for us and we are always happy to see everyone's ride no mater how plain it is, at least once. Talk to you later, ciao.
