Seatbelt Dinger Question

I agree with Akirby -to wear the seat belt or not is your call. I think most people are familiar that the benefits outweigh the downfalls. In the example given, remember - the seatbelt would not have been responsible for what may have happened when the roof was sheared off, that would have been the cause and effect. People argue with physics everyday, those that gamble risk loosing big time. Hit a ditch at 25 MPH and see how abruptly a vehicle stops, you may have a new appreciation for your seatbelt. I doubt anybody online will be able to change your opinion of when and why to wear your seatbelt, I do hope your approach serves you well.

 

I also agree with Andre, when it is my car, you have two choices...

 

Have you seen the MyKey video, the belt minder will actually mute the radio. I love it! For the record, I made a series of poor judgements one evening, and got into a vehicle being driven by somebody who had no business being behind the wheel. We hit another moving car from behind, and I was injured. Since then, I wear my seat belt to move the car from the driveway to park in the street.

Once again this is turning into a argument of opinions! I race a dirt latemodel on a weekly basis! And have been in my share of crashes! So I know how fast a vehicle can come to an abrubt stop! But it is also my choice to drive without my belt if I'm just traveling down my long driveway to get the mail or down the country road to the store! I'm now done with this subject and to each their own! But I do know one thing! Everyone knows when you get in a real tence situation, most people panic! And I for one know if I would've had my belt on during that accident I wouldn't be here! As I had to make a split second move! And I highly doubt I would've ducked in time with a belt restricting my movement at a fast pace! Since when your hard on the brakes you belts lock down!

I bet when you race you wear a helmet, harness and possible other safety equipment. You seem to be helping the side you are against. Again, I do not mean to insult you, just please don't throw out opinion and observations as facts. I have never seen a plane crash, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I wear my seatbelt on those things too, kinda silly I guess...

Well I know I'm talking to deaf ears here that only want to hear what they want! I did not help the other side! I only stated that I know first hand how fast cars can stop in a accident! But I was watching speed tv's dangerous drives lastnight and they had a roll over accident on there that the women was thrown 50 feet out of the car! Wanna know what the state trooper said?

 

In a roll over you have a 50/50 chance of survival when wearing your seatbelt! Sometimes its better to be tossed out so that your not crushed inside the car! Lastnights rollover he stated that if the woman would have been belted she would have been a fatality!

 

So once again I am now done with this subject! danager i respect the opinons on here! But I also would appreciate alittle respect for my own! As all the nay sayers on here don't want to get in their car without a seatbelt, thats fine! You don't see me on here blasting them for wearing it! So I feel there should be no difference in my opinon! But the only opinons I don't respect is akirby as I can see he thinks hes a know it all that won't listen to anything! I speak my opinons on what I know! And when someone wants to act like I'm liying or making bs. Then I take offence!

If you just said "I don't want to wear one" then nobody would have an issue. But when you try to rationalize not wearing one by saying it's actually safer then that is absolutely wrong in so many ways.

 

There is NO WAY that you're safer in a rollover if you're ejected from the vehicle except in the RARE circumstance where the roof is severely crushed - but again that's very very rare. Any trooper that says otherwise is an idiot.

 

Here are some NHTSA statistics for you. The evidence is overwhelming.

 

Use of safety belts at the time of a crash makes a significant difference in hospitalization outcomes. One person in six (17%) who was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash was hospitalized compared to one person in three (32%) who was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash. (NHTSA, 2005)

 

 

Ejection from a vehicle is one of the most injurious events that can happen to a person in a crash. In fatal crashes in 2004, 74 percent of the passenger vehicle occupants who were totally ejected from the vehicle where killed. Safety belts are effective in preventing total ejections; only one percent of the occupants who used restraints were totally ejected, compared with 29 percent of unrestrained occupants. (NHTSA, 2005)

 

In 2005, safety belt use in the U.S. reached 82 percent, the highest level yet recorded and a statistically significant increase over the 80 percent use rate in 2004. (NHTSA, 2005)

 

Research has found that lap/shoulder safety belts, when used, reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car occupants by 45 percent and the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50 percent. For light truck occupants, safety belts reduce the risk of fatal injury by 60 percent and moderate-to-critical injury by 65 percent. (NHTSA, 2005)

 

In 2004, 63 percent of young drivers (15 to 20 years old) of passenger vehicles involved in fatal crashes who had been drinking were unrestrained. Of the young drivers who had been drinking and were killed, 74 percent were unrestrained. (NHTSA, 2005)

 

Over half (55 percent) of the passenger vehicle occupants killed in traffic crashes in 2004 were unrestrained. (NHTSA, 2005)

 

During 2004, 7,810 passenger vehicle occupants under 15 years old were involved in fatal crashes. For those children, where restraint use was known, 29 percent were unrestrained; among those who were fatally injured, 50 percent were unrestrained. (NHTSA, 2005)

 

In 2004, 36 percent of passenger car occupants and 38 percent of light truck occupants involved in fatal crashes were unrestrained. (NHTSA, 2005)

 

It is estimated that 451 children under age 5 were saved as a result of child restraint use in 2004; if all children under 5 had used child safety seats an estimated 566 lives (that is, an additional 114) could have been saved. An estimated 7,472 lives were saved by child restraints from 1975-2004. (NHTSA, 2005)

 

From 1975 through 2004, it is estimated that safety belts saved 195,382 lives, including 15,434 lives saved in 2004. If all passenger vehicle occupants over age 4 wore safety belts, 21,273 lives (that is, an additional 5,839) could have been saved in 2004. (NHTSA, 2005)

My opinion, wearing a seatbelt makes you more likely to avoid serious injury in the event of a crash. That's my belief, so I always wear a seatbelt and everyone who rides in my car wears one too. Now, for someone who's stated twice they are done with the subject, you sure are stringing it out. If you feel you have to defend your position, I guess that's fine, but I don't believe your going to convert many to your side, regardless of how you feel about belt use.

It's not my opinion - those are NHTSA statistics gathered from actual crash data.

 

You are 45% less likely to be killed if you're wearing seatbelts.

 

There is a 74% chance that you'll be killed if you are ejected from a vehicle and 29% of unbelted drivers are ejected. That means if you're not wearing a seatbelt and you're involved in a crash there is a 21% chance you'll be ejected and killed. If you're wearing a seatbelt the odds are less than 1%.

 

I don't know about you but I'll take less than 1% over 21% every time.

 

 

And any law enforcement officer that says or implies otherwise should be fired on the spot for ignorance.

I have a 07 Jack Roush Edition SEL and I was wondering what I had to do to disable the dinger that dings when you don't use your seatbelt.

This is so stupid why are people arguing he shouldnt have to explain himself to anyone. Me personally I dont want to be going thru mcdonalds or something with the damn dinger going off cause i took my belt of to get my wallet. It has nothing at all to do with wearing or not wearing it plain and simple its annoying and doesnt need to ding every 2 seconds.
