Ext Temp Display

Recommended Posts

Just got my '08 Fusion SEL V6. Everything works awesome except for the Extternal Tempurature Display. When it is 98* it will read like 109*. I took it to Ford and they replaced the sensor today.

The temp reads a little closer but seems it is still reading 4+ degrees hotter. Are others having a similar problem? I know you need to be driving for a while to get an accurate reading but this seems way off.

Thanx..

I find that when I'm in urban areas, or areas where traffic is heavy, that the tempurature will read higher than what the weatherman says it is. I think this is because the car's sensor is picking up heat off the road, as well as heat from other vehicles. Once I get out into more open, less congested areas the tempurature readout agrees pretty well with the real tempurature.

Not to mention the fact that the actual ambient air temperature can vary by 5-10 degrees from one area to another. Depends on where the radio station is reporting from. In Atlanta they usually use the airport South of the city. On the North side it's usually 5-6 degrees cooler.

And you can't go by bank signs either.

So you are all saying that you are satisfied with the Ext. Temps being displayed in your Fusion's??

Yes, I see no problem with mine.

In the summertime, I take those exterior readings with a grain of salt. If it's off by a degree or two, no big deal and like others have said, the temperature varies outside anyway, sun, shade, elevation etc. etc.

What I really like the outside thermometer for is when it's cold outside and the roads are wet. I like to know when the temperature is hovering near 32 (freezing) and I don't wait for it to say exactly 32 before I drive more carefully. Right now I dont have that option in my Escape but I am looking forward to owning another new car that does have it bacause I do miss it. (That and a compass too.)

On the 2013+ Fusion the ambient temp sensor is behind the lower grille, in the corner closest to the passenger side headlamp. This would contribute to potentially picking up heat from the roadway on sunny summer days.

My ambient temp sensor seems to be fairly accurate, based on local airport reports and also on my outdoor temp sensor at home. And here in AZ, we can really pick up heat off of the road. :)

My only issue with the ambient temp sensor is that sometimes when I start up the car after it has been sitting for a few hours, the displayed temp will be stuck on the temp it was at when I turned the car off, and it can remain stuck at that old temp for up to about 5 minutes before it shows the current actual temp.

Have you had a chance to talk with your dealer, Hybrider? I'll be happy to check into some options; what's your mileage?

Thanks for the offer, Meagan, but I try to avoid service calls like they are the plague, unless a crucial feature is unbearably malfunctioning or a major part has fallen off. ;)

Fortunately this is just a teeny tiny annoyance so far, so I'll manage to live with it, so long as it doesn't start interfering with my climate control functions.

No worries! I'll be around if you need me. :)
