Passenger Door wont open

Hello, I have a 2006 V6 SE

 

Right now, my passenger door wont open. Someone was trying to enter my car as I was trying to unlock the door, so they pulled the handle from the outside as I was hitting the unlock button on the inside. It happened just a couple times in a row, but when they got into the car and went to shut the door it wouldnt latch and bounced right back. I tried to shut it from the outside several times and lock and unlock it but it still wouldnt latch.

 

Then I jiggled a latch on the inside of the door... I was able to shut the door. However, now that door will not open from the inside or outside. Anyone know how this is fixed? Has this happened to anyone else? I know it varies by area but I am wondering how much fixing it would cost. I am a woman and I know nothing about cars and have never been able to find a trustworthy mechanic - I have sucker written on my face. I just dont want to get ripped off and if anyone has any idea how this would be fixed and an idea of how many hours of labor would be required I would greatly appreciate your input.

Hi 2006fusiondriver. I will not ask how it managed to happen "just a couple times in a row". :blink:

 

I know that some people hate to hear this, but bottom line is that Internet diagnosis is inaccurate at best, and completely worthless at its worst. And this is coming from someone who is handy with cars.

 

It is impossible for us to ascertain whether something is broken in the locking mechanism, the door handle mechanism, the latching mechanism, two of the above, all three of the above, or something completely different.

 

That being said, it is impossible to guess what parts or how much labor may be needed to repair it. It may be something simple that a friend with a little bit of automotive knowledge could fix in 5 minutes. But it is impossible to tell over the Internet.

 

To use a loose analogy, it is like telling us you have a stomach ache since two nights ago, and asking us to diagnose what is wrong, how serious it may be and what medication you should take.

 

If you do not have a mechanic you can trust, ask your friends and family for a recommendation. Someone you know must know a trustworthy mechanic. Or simply take it to your local Ford/Lincoln Mercury Dealership and have them diagnose/repair it.

 

Bottom line is, an Internet poll will get you nowhere. One of us may get lucky and guess the right cause, but so what? You won't know if it is the right guess and your car will still need to be taken to a mechanic where you are.

PS - If you want a wild and worthless guess: If the door panel needs to be removed, you could figure on a half-hour to an hours labor plus parts (if needed). That would be a beginning point. If you or your friend damaged the door latch by slamming it in the closed position, there could be added damage. But again, Internet guesses are worth exactly what we pay for them. :shades:

BBF - thanks for your response. I understand no one can tell me for certain what happened to the door latch but I thought maybe it was a common problem. Guess not. I wasnt sugarcoating it, they really grabbed the handle only 3 or 4 times as I was trying to unlock it and I didnt slam it... If I had a b*tch fit on my door Id expect it not to open, but not with the sequence of events that actually transpired!

BBF, Actually, i Fixed Tons of problems on my focus by looking online.... Common issues are common, therefore lots of people has them, lots of people on internet forum talking about the same problems, same fix, you know... If you know how to use Internet you can find anything you want :)
