Thinking about purchasing a Ford Fusion Hybrid

Back in 2012, I purchased an used 2002 Toyota Prius with 80k miles at an auction for $4800. It was great and I averaged around 52mpg average upon usage. The model line of first generation prius (2001 - 2003) had some defects, but the main one was the extremely small tires. They needed replacement just over a year of usage (about 15k miles with my driving). Anyway, it recently gave out at 220k miles and the repairs were just too much for what the car was worth.

 

After doing some research on what I'm looking for and what my needs are, I've landed on purchasing a Ford Fusion Hybrid. My main questions revolve around how high the MPG can go assuming you're using good MPG hybrid driving techniques and live in mostly sunny weather (Los Angeles). The EPA estimated MPG for old 2002 Prius was 41mpg, but I was about to reach around 52mpg. The Ford Fusion Hybrid had an EPA estimated 42mpg, and I was wondering if I would be able to stretch the MPG to around 52mpg or higher like I did my old hybrid?

 

I've been reading the information on this forum which has been extremely helpful, and have even seen a 600 mile club! :)

There's no reason you can't average in the mid-40s. I do it in Colorado, where the heater is on most of the winter and the AC is on most of the summer. I doubt that you'll get as high MPG as you did with the Prius. But the Fusion is stylish, very nice to look at. There's a reason that some of us refer to a Prius as an "appliance": it looks very much like a toaster on wheels.

Mileage depends on the commute. If you run the speed limit on freeways (65 - 70 mph) you will be lucky to get 40 mpg. If your commute is always at 55 and below, mid 40s is reasonable. Much bigger and heavier car than a Prius!

My usual displayed mpg with my 2015 FFH is mid-47s, actual/measured about 2 mpg less. That's with a combination of suburban and highway driving with lots of hills, moderate climate (SF Bay Area).

My 2019 FFH gets around high 40's to low 50's on a long highway trip with little effort. Around town I get low 40's.

On highway trips I almost always do the local speed limit - 50-55. I haven't taken any really long highway/turnpike trips yet.

This board has also given me much knowledge about the FFH. I just came back from the dealer a while ago, and have 2 preowned choices that I might choose...

 

1) 2017 FFH SE

Mileage: 44,334

Exterior: Black

Interior: Ebony

History: 1 owner (rental)

Price: $13,961

 

2) 2016 FFH SE

Mileage: 18,447

Exterior: Magnetic

Interior: Ebony

History: 1 owner (lease)

Price: $15,561

 

Both have no reported accidents, nor issues on the Carfax. Will also bring my mechanic friend with me to check both out... which one would you guys recommend based on the info? Is there a big mileage difference in the 2016 vs. 2017 FFH model?

I'd prefer a leased vehicle over a rental. Only $1,600 less for more than twice the miles? Knowing nothing else, the 2016 would be an easy choice for me. Just don't look at the depreciated value of either car in a year or two...

Agreed. Plus rentals tend to get beat by different drivers. Whereas a leased one would be a bit more taken care of since any issues the leased owner would get nailed on and have to pay.

Late post, but I actually did end up purchasing the 2016 Ford Fusion Hybrid w/ 18,447 miles. Its been amazing in terms of handling, mileage, look and just overall excellent!!

 

Since it was still a used car, the dealer only filled the gas tank up halfway. However, with the usage and driving methods I would use on my previous hybrid, I was able to get near 375 miles before I have to fill up the gas tank the first time! I love it!!
