Glove Box was rattling upon closing

Recommended Posts

My glove box was making a rattling noise every time I closed it. It was pretty irritating. Suspecting a toothpick to be lodged in it or the wiring harness to be rubbing on the hinge I took it apart like you might if you were changing the air filter. It turned out the gear that lowers the door down slowly was malfunctioning and causing a rattle. So I called around and went to a junk yard that had a couple fusions. I was able to get the replacement gear and replace the faulty one. If anyone else is experiencing this I can put up detailed instructions on how to get it off and on again.

Does it rattle when you're driving or only when you're closing it? There's a rattle at certain speeds coming from that general area that some of us have complained about. We've never been able to pinpoint. I'm wondering if this is it?

sschnath Are you talking about the vibration that occurs at a certain rpm (maybe 2200)? No, this was only rattling when I closed the glovebox. The gear seemed to have become loose or just didn't nestle in the housing as well as the replacement one I got, which caused the gears to slip past one another resulting in the annoying rattle. After removing the bad gear I took it apart and put it back together and then that seemed to improve it but there is no point taking the junk yard one out and putting the original back in. I'll keep it if the replacement one fails. The vibration that I hear may be coming from the seatbelt pretensioner area? I don't know.

Yes, that vibration 35-40 mph roughly. It sounds to me like it comes from the A-pillar area on the passenger side which is I why I thought why it might be related to your issue. The hunt continues!
