Now that my 13 FFH Ti is out of warranty, today I dusted off the tools and changed the oil and rotated the tires. Found a nice surprise when I removed the oil filter my Autonation dealer used. I don't know how long this has been going on but I'm quite ticked off, having these POS parts on my vehicle. After some Googling, apparently this is only Autonation dealers doing this, which are the two Ford dealers near me. Next time I absolutely have to have service, I'm driving somewhere else.

I'm sorry, but what exactly is the issue here? Re-branding of auto parts has been going on for many, many years. What makes you think that the filter doesn't come off the same assembly line as the Motorcraft parts?

The mechanical damage to the filter because a wrench was used instead of hand tightening it. If the installer wasn't strong enough to turn it 3/4 of a turn after the rubber gasket came in contact with the engine, he should have asked someone stronger to install it.

Ford dealers should be using certified FordMoCo parts, not POS Chinese made junk.

 

Lastly, maybe this is biggest scam from auto dealers but under warranty I was always told if one uses aftermarket parts you raise the risk of having manufactures warranty being negated. So while vehicle is under warranty Inhave Ford dealer perform every recommended service to avoid that possibility. Now Autonation uses own line of materials to “save money” etc etc. Arenty they going against their own statements?

The “damage” was me getting the filter off since Bruce Banner apparently put it on (and the drain plug). Must have been “steroid day” at the dealership.

I damage every filter I remove with my large water pump pliers. ;) There's really no faster tool made for the job!

Yep. Had to use the Lisle wrench to get it off. Almost brought out the impact gun to get to oil drain plug out as well.

Rubbish. Hammer a long shaft screwdriver through the filter. With such leverage, you can pop off the filter with your pinkie.

 

Can be a bit messy, though.

There's no scam, just your misunderstanding. Ford and all OEMs are legally required to accept any aftermarket parts that meet their specifications. I'm sure these Autonation parts all meet Ford specifications. I'm also sure that many of the "certified FoMoCo parts" that the dealer installs are not the same as the parts installed at the factory, though they all meet Ford specifications. To put it another way, if these Autonation branded filters meet Ford specifications (which I'm sure they do), then Ford has effectively "certified" them for use in your car.

 

Basically Ford/Motorcraft are playing the same game as everyone else; they run their own parts business in a way that makes the most business sense. There's really no incentive for them to do things any differently than any other aftermarket parts supplier.

Been there, done that, too! The large water pump pliers ended that fun, however... :)
