A strap wrench would be useful in that situation.

I damage every filter I remove with my large water pump pliers. ;) There's really no faster tool made for the job!

Rubbish. Hammer a long shaft screwdriver through the filter. With such leverage, you can pop off the filter with your pinkie.

 

Can be a bit messy, though.

Been there, done that, too! The large water pump pliers ended that fun, however... :)
