Engine cooling temperature

I asked this question on the Lincoln forum but did not get an answer.

 

I have 2013 MKZh. I just changed the view where I can see the cooling system temperature. Should the gauge move at all? The gauge constantly moves. It is never is one set space like on a regular gas engine. If I remote start, I see that the gauge barely registers anything. On highway or where gas engine is in use, the gauge registers about halfway up. In city driving, under EV mode, the temp drops back down to between barely readable and below the first mark. I've had this car since Sept 17 but never had the gauge on the dash to observe. So I do not know if this has been going on since I got the car. Is this how the engine cooling system should work on a hybrid?

 

I bought this car in Sept 17. It had 23k on it. I was a bit skeptical cause it had 2 previous owners. But the thing runs like a top and can get 40-45 mpg without a lot of effort. :yahoo:

It's normal. You have had this car during fall and winter when the ICE doesn't warm up to normal temperatures. As the weather warms you will see it warm more often to the mid range indication.

Was out around town today, was about 50 degrees, and noticed it was in the middle of the gauge through the whole trip. Moved a bit down when in electric mode.

I would recommend getting a ScanGaugeII or other OBD gauge to monitor WT. If you watch the videos on How to get great gas mileage in a FFH they explain your issue with WT. :)

An alternative would be to just enjoy the car, drive it normally, and let it operate the way the Ford engineers designed it.

Chris109 asked the question why his WT Smart Gauge was acting the way it was. My answer gave him a way to determine if he had a problem or not. :)
