Michbrue Report post Posted May 31, 2017 Hello I'm new to this forum and have a 2013 fusion hybrid. I have had the steering rack replaced twice in 4 years and have problems again. The car periodically surges forward when I drive but can't be duplicated by service guys. Anyone had a similar problem?
md13ffhguy Report post Posted May 31, 2017 There's a sensation of surging forward that can occur when the front wheels lose contact with the road momentarily. I've had this occur on occasion when braking (even lightly) while passing over a slight dip/pothole/manhole cover. It can be unnerving, but I've found it to be harmless. I've always just maintained pressure on the brakes and it's never been a problem. Could this be what you are experiencing?
murphy Report post Posted May 31, 2017 It feels like it is surging forward but it is not. It is an instantaneous loss of regen braking because one front wheel has lost contact with the ground. I can demonstrate it at will by driving over a low manhole cover while using regen braking only. It happens because of the way a differential works. The solution is to press harder on the brake pedal to engage the friction brakes.
