MFT not handling MP3 tags correctly

Is there a trick to loading a USB drive with mp3s so that MFT recognizes them correctly?

 

I am using a 32GB PNY USB stick to hold numerous albums in the following directory structure:

 

[Root]/Music/[Artist]/[Album]/

 

All files have ID3v1 & ID3v2 tags.

 

But MFT doesn't recognize the track # ID, and in the Shuffle options, "Album" is grayed out.

 

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

MFT ignores the track number tag. Instead, it displays the sequence number of the current track in the album, playlist, folder, or whatever it is you've asked it to play.

I mean, if you have a playlist called X and an album called Y, and the fourth song in Y - let's call it Z - happens to be the seventh song in X, then you can:

- either use the command "play playlist X", in which case when it gets to the song in question it will display track # 7,

- or use the command "play album Y", in which case when it gets to the song in question it will display track # 4,

- or use the command "play track Z", in which case it will display track # 1.

It will never display the track number that's stored as a tag in the mp3 file itself.

At least that's what mine seems to do.

I've found the solution.

 

Turn Gracenote off.

Only one drawback, MFT doesn't handle disk numbering (but really, does disk numbering actually mean anything in a non optical media world?)

I have removed all ID3 Ver 1 tags from all of my mp3s, keeping them all at V 2.3, I believe it is. I've also found that if I keep all album art at 320x320 pixels, everything displays correctly. It has taken months to do, but it's worth it.

 

To get around the track number being ignored, I have playlists created for Albums where I want to hear them played in order. But I agree in a 'trackless world' track number is becoming less and less an issue.
