Now that I found the button on the stalk, still no change. When I push button (for on / enabled), shouldn't I see a vehicle outline with 2 dashed lines on either side? Shouldn't this display on the left display? What if ACC is enabled, where does the LKS display?

I've tried turning on at < 40 mph, > 40 mph, with ACC off, with ACC on, nothing. I've tried pushing for 10 seconds, 5 seconds, nothing.

I did change the sensitivity to maximum and when I did, I felt the feedback sample in the steering wheel. I have it set to aid + alert, maximum sensitivity, but none of those settings should affect its ability to turn on right?

For 1 brief moment, after starting vehicle with in park, I pressed the stalk button, and briefly saw the vehicle outline with dashed lines, but then it disappeared on its own.

I assume a visit to a service department is in order.

Crap, admin can you move this to the driver assist technologies forum? I didn't see that forum until after I posted this. That's probably a better place for it than here. Sorry about that.

If I'm remembering correctly, the lane keep assist indicator are the two dashed lines. The outline of the car is for the cruise. As I don't have the ACC I can't speak to that. And sadly I can't go outside and check because Ford is still trying to order me a replacement camera for mine and at the moment I don't have the lane keep assist.

LKS display is a pair of dashed lines to each side of the ACC car shape. When on and you are okay, these are green, and they change to yellow and red (on the side where you are deviating) as you deviate more ... plus the alert. I've only tested it with ACC on and set to 55 MPH. However I believe you have to be over 40 for it to be a viable aid.

PLEASE NOTE: This is on a '17 FFH SE and may be different on earlier models.

Thanks men. Yes it occupies the same display area as ACC, but with (at least) the dashed lines added.

When I start the car in P, I can switch it on and off at will from the button. I see the LKS display toggling with each button press. But as soon as I put it in gear (R or D), it disappears and the button no longer appears to work. I.e. the display never indicates LKS enabled once in gear at any speed with any amount of button selections.

Definitely time for a service visit.

The 2013+ available Ford Lane Keeping has three modes:

  • Alert only
  • Aid only
  • Alert + Aid

In a review from 2011/2012 concerning the 2013 model year Fusion:

Ford’s Lane Keeping System includes three main components: Lane Keeping Alert, Lane Keeping Aid, and Driver Alert. Using a camera mounted in the windshield, the system monitors the car’s position within its lane at speed above 40 miles per hour.

If the system is set to Lane Keeping Alert and the driver begins to wander toward a lane boundary without signaling, the system provides both a visual warning and a vibration through the steering wheel to alert the driver.

Choose Lane Keeping Aid, and the system will react in much the same way; however, if the driver fails to correct his position within the lane, the Fusion’s electric power steering will gently adjust course to keep the car centered within the lane.

Visually,

ALERT is shown as active using a display of your car with two dashed lines on either side.

AID is shown as active with little triangles shown orthogonal but inside the dashed lines.

(sorry about image scaling)..

fu_se_hy_f13_t1.jpg

See the dashes? No Aid..

With Aid on (see triangles?)

For some reason my "aid" is really kicking in recently. The psychologists call it "negative feedback". It's one of my favorite features of my new FFH platinum.

So with aid+alert I won't see anything? No dashes, no triangles? So I can hammer on the on/off button in aid+alert mode, and nothing displays? Maybe it isn't broken. Makes one wonder why Ford offers aid+alert setting if nothing is going to display. Counter-intuitive to me.

Here are my scenarios, all while vehicle is in D:

1. Alert only - toggling left stalk button displays no vehicle outline, no dashes, no triangles.

2. Aid only - toggling left stalk button displays no vehicle outline, no dashes, no triangles.

3. Aid+Alert - toggling left stalk button displays no vehicle outline, no dashes, no triangles.

Perhaps LKS is not changeable while vehicle is in D?

Please read page 206 of your owners manual. If you lost it you will have to suffer my half baked explanation and image here:

1. Dashed lines lit up means "Alert" is on.

2. Little "hip" triangles pointing at car means "Aid" is on.

I would show the whole display (instead of this tight crop) but then you would know how fast I was going when I took this picture (thank God for Ford LKS!)

Ok, I see that display after I start the car and press the LKS button. Once I put car in either D or R, the display icon disappears, and further pressing the LKS button displays nothing.

Here are some reasons Ford LKS may not work.. Just trying to help..

  • LKS only activates at 40MPH or higher.
  • Is the camera on the front of your rear-view mirror blocked? (If one of the sensors on the car is blocked you should get an error message on the dash).
  • Is it possible you covered a sensor with a Dallas Cowboy decal?
  • Did you program a MyKey for your Fob with the option set to disable LKS? (one might do this to give the car to a teen who would be flummoxed by such a feature)
  • Are there markings on the road? (You should at least see the two dashed lines on either side of your vehicle).
  • Are you 100% sure have the "available" LKS? (I know you see the display on startup -- just walking through the possibilities)

This video from Ford can help also.

The video will be "grayed out" until you select your vehicle from the 3 drop downs i.e. (for example "2015", "Fusion", and your version of SYNC)

From page 204 of the manual (not 100% sure it applies):

You can reset the system by either:

  • Switching the ignition off and on.

  • Stopping the vehicle and then opening and closing the drivers door.

Good luck

Thank you sir.

Last night I executed a "clear all MyKeys" (or whatever it's called). I didn't think of that.

Same behavior. I parked car, started car, pressed the LKS button, observed the LKS display -- enabled of course, but won't engage until >=40 mph, put car in D, took off, and LKS display showed for about 5 seconds. Then it disappeared, and wouldn't enable with repeated pressing of the LKS stalk button.

Thanks for the suggestions. We'll see what the dealership says, however, I'm 117% positive McDavid Ford in Fort Worth will say "They all do that, there's nothing we can do about it." Or, "It's working, it displays on the dash when you're in P." Can't say I've ever met a service department that detests service work as much as them.

Update: My Fusion is at Five Star Ford in North Richland Hills TX. Received call yesterday. They are most certainly able to reproduce the lack of LKS, and don't know what is wrong, so they contacted Ford engineering I believe it is.

Don't know if that means they'll send a field engineer out to examine.

I told the tech just replace the stalk with button, and the BCM (assuming LKS is controlled in the body control module). He laughed and said Ford may very well throw parts at it.

We'll see what happens, but unlike McDavid Ford service in Fort Worth whose attitude was "Don't worry about it; you don't need LKS anyway There's nothing that can be done about it", Five Star took the issue seriously and is looking at the car.

Typically when home base is brought in, it will begin with phone/email type of coaching from Engineering. It may well be something between stalk and BCM but HQ will make recommendations to the dealer for work. Sort of a script they go through.

However, this dealer sounds really on the ball compared to the other blokes. Stay with them! Let us know what happens, please.

I guess that would make economic and expedient sense rather than bring in an engineer (who would then probably have to communicate with the home base himself :))

Latest word as of Tuesday afternoon was they were looking at the "forward" camera mounted in / near the rear view mirror. I believe the service writer was saying they are trying a new one. I have yet to hear anything today, so I'm hoping no news is good news.

After searching Google last night, it appears a few F-150s with LKS and same / similar problem as mine were also solved via camera replacement.

Hah! I should have waited before posting. Just received call. Said replacing camera / sensor. I don't know if that means camera sensor as in the camera is fine, but the sensor is bad, or the whole assembly is called a "camera sensor". I asked if they are confident that will solve the problem and was told "yes."

Now waiting on part(s). Stay tuned...

Part arrived today; sweet! It's a whole rear mirror assembly. Box arrived damaged. Assembly removed. Assembly in pieces; broken. Let's order another one. I wonder how many they will go through before getting an undamaged one.

If I'm reading FordParts.com correctly, looks to be about a $1900 customer retail part. I'll guess about $1600 dealer / Ford cost. That's quite pricey to be trying multiple times.

$1900 for a rear view mirror? Not sure I can believe that.

In any case, it's awesome Ford tech like this that makes it so much fun to drive (and one more reason to go for the high-end extended service plan at around the price of one rear-view mirror assembly).

For $2025, the Cadillac CT6 will provide a rear-view mirror that is not a mirror -- the "mirror" is a TV screen projecting what is behind you in real time.

https://www.extremetech.com/extreme/223560-feds-ok-cadillacs-high-res-lcd-rear-view-mirror

One review said there is a "lag" between what you see in the rear-view LCD display and what is on road (scary)..

Always check the junk yard first - scavenging up a $2000 rear view mirror for $20 is very satisfying..

You don't have to believe it. And if you think you're going to find one in a salvage yard for $20, or even $200, then you're not fooling anyone.

It's also under warranty, so my cost is simply time away from vehicle.

From fordparts.com, 17700 is what's called the base number (part numbers like this will also have a prefix and a suffix). I don't believe mine has automatic windscreen wiper, but from what I understand, the auto windshield wiper uses the same camera that the LKS uses. CADS I'll assume means something akin to Camera Automatic Dimming System.

I imagine this is the same rear view mirror that's in my 2017. As I said, the price is customer retail. I can probably find dealer cost, and who knows what Ford's internal warranty part cost is.

I apologize for the offense. The junkyard statement was a joke. When I got my first car you could go to a junkyard and get a new Motor for $400 (without install and other essentials). The fact that a $400 bill would not even buy a rear view mirror these days is a real statement on the state of things.

I am not criticizing or making fun of your situation. My jaw is just stuck to the floor in disbelief that a rear-view mirror is worth more than 5% of my car's total value.

I would talk more, but I am off to get a Ford ESP (in case my $1963.80 mirror goes out).

Cheers

Oh no, no offense taken. I can fully understand your disbelief. We're good.

I was WAG that the mirror would be $600, but when I saw that on fordparts.com and then the "damaged in shipping" phone call yesterday I was like this is getting expensive for someone.

I also imagine there is a new industry within the salvage yard industry of getting those high $ items as soon as the vehicles hit the salvage yards, if not before the vehicles get to the salvage yards. As you noted, many vehicles with these types of assemblies becoming more common.

Can you imagine a FFH sitting in a salvage yard with say the doors removed but that $ mirror assembly still sitting in the vehicle partially open to the elements? Heck if I could get them for $200, I'd be taking out loans to purchase as many as I could at that price.

Ditto for HVBs. I can't imagine a FFH (or any hybrid for that matter) sitting in a salvage yard due to front end collision with a fully functioning HVB. I'll pay you $45 for that HVB!

Latest word from service department: They don't know what's wrong with it. New mirror / camera assembly can't be calibrated or can't get operational with LKS; behaving just like original assembly. They are supposedly back on the phone with Ford. If they can make it to Saturday, it'll be a full 2 weeks trying to get LKS operational.

Finally. Vehicle is repaired. LKS now operational. Forward looking camera is part of the rear view mirror assembly; and the whole assembly was replaced. Work order also lists calibration as executed too.
