Bad Cell?

Just picked up a 2012 MKZ Hybrid with 58,000 miles, replaces a 2009 MKZ. The 09 was a nice vehicle, this 12 is amazing. I'm really enjoying learning the Hybrid system.

 

I got a copy of the service records from the dealer, and found a reference to:

 

Vehicle battery keeps losing charge Verified concern found bad cell in battery DTC 050C B 5JTN0QR8 ACES: X889P

 

This was at 40,000 miles. I'm hoping it was the 12V battery, anyone have an insight?

Pure speculation on my part, but I suspect that is in reference to the 12v battery.

Definitely the 12 volt battery.

Dealer uses a special battery charger/tester unit that charges and tests. If its faulty, it gives out similar codes. Prevents warranty fraud.

Thanks! I suspected as much, but this technology is stretching my car repair/maintenance knowledge. So, seems like they would have replaced the battery at that point, so it's nice that the battery is a bit newer.

There are several threads on the 12 vdc battery in this and other Ford hybrid forums. It is the weakest link in the car. If the car starts to display weird faults, particularly after the warranty period, replace the 12 vdc battery even before you take it to the dealer. In the 2013+ models which is a completely different car from the 2010-12s, the 12 vdc charging system has frequently been a problem in early cars. Software updates may have solved most problems. The 2010-12s are very reliable so long as you keep a good 12 vdc battery in them. The next biggest problems are oxygen sensors and dirty throttle bodies above 100,000 miles. They are minor and normal.

I did see the advice on the 12v battery, and I will keep it in mind. Now that you mention it, i did also read about the oxygen sensor. How bad is it to get at? Throttle body should be a piece of cake.
