2013 FFH - Wrench Light, Check Engine Light, Car Won't Move

Recommended Posts

My 2013 FFH has been at the shop for almost 3 weeks now and I wanted to reach out and see if anyone else is having this issue.

We drove my car out to the grandparent's house with no issues and have had no warning lights previously except for low tire pressure. Went to go to town for some dinner and the check engine light came on, the wrench light came on, and the warning that says "Stop Safely" came on. The car would not move at all. We turned the key off and on and finally was able to move the car and went to town with no warning lights on at all.

Stopped for dinner and went to leave and the same thing happened as before. Was able to reset again by turning key off and on. We made it home safely and the next morning when getting ready to head to work, same thing happened. Except this time, turning key off and on did not reset anything.

I had the car towed to the Ford dealership and they said that there were about 14 codes showing when they hooked to computer and that they would need to do diagnostic test to pinpoint issue. When they did that, they found that the battery was below 50% capacity and needed to be replaced. After replacing the battery, they said that it was showing an issue with the coolant pump and wiring harness. They disconnected those parts and reconnected and could not get a code to show.

I got the car back last Tuesday (week and a day after taking to shop) and drove about 40 miles round trip with no issues. The next morning getting ready to go to work and the same warning light came on. I was able to reset and get the car to my office, but that afternoon the same issue happened, but wasn't able to reset. I contacted tow truck and was waiting in the car until they got there. When the tow truck came, they asked what was wrong and I explained briefly the situation. He asked for the keys and started the car and only check engine light came on. I told him the car would move so I drove to dealership with tow truck following just in case.

Dealership has had for another week now and they cannot figure out what is wrong with the vehicle. They have load tested and ohm tested the wiring and connectors that Ford told them to and all checked out. The problem is still intermittent so they still can't pinpoint the issue. I spoke to the actual mechanic and he said that he didn't want to throw a new coolant pump on it and that not be the issue, which I appreciate. However, it is getting frustrating not having the vehicle and I feel like we are really getting no where on a resolution. I am about 10,000 miles out of 60,000 mile warranty, which is also frustrating because the mechanic said they would send a field tech out to diagnose any computer issues, if that is what this issue is.

Any thoughts or comments on this issue and what I may can do from here?

Which battery was below 50% capacity, 12 vdc or HVB?

It was the 12 VDC. I posted on a different Fusion forum site since this one was in maintenance mode. This is one of the responses I got on that one.

Hard to tell without more info that I am guessing you don't have. I would suspect that there is a ready state for the pump or some kind of sensor that is reading out of spec or does not initialize properly and the computer is hitting a failsafe of some type. Ford diagnostics are pretty weak here as I don't think they do things like sniff network messaging for commands or responses rather than have them run scripts out of IDS as part of a procedure. Replacing the pump or related sensor would be one of the few things they have left to try it sounds like.

I would assume they have updated the software on everything to the latest at least in this process?

It sounds to me that it could be a wiring or ground issue. I've heard of problems like this if the wiring or ground isnt correctly connected. Does this happen on the highway only?

I'd try:

Disconnect the 12v batt and let it sit for a few mins. (You'll loose your saved stuff and EV+ saved points)

Check your fuses (read the owners manual to find what system may be causing the most trouble)

PS it would be supper helpful if we knew what they codes were (this helps other FFH owners too)
