It looks like there's some kind of belt used. This sounds like another attempt to avoid using the patented Toyota/Ford eCVT planetary gear type transmission.

It looks like there's some kind of belt used. This sounds like another attempt to avoid using the patented Toyota/Ford eCVT planetary gear type transmission.

No, this is not even a CVT transmission, no belts and no planetary gear.  It's similar to a manual transmission with electric motors added to synchronize engine and gear speeds to eliminate the clutch and possibly the friction cones on gear synchronizers.   A computer will be used to perform the actual gear shifting and matching gear speeds.

Well it has a motor/generator on the ICE and another on the wheels, so it can launch from stopped electrically (like our ECVT) and stop/start the ICE at red lights. But the design is intended for performance cars, not economy.
