PCM Replacement in 2013 Fusion Hybrid SE

Recommended Posts

Ok so here's the back story... On new years eve I was on the Parkway when I suddenly got an onscreen message saying "check rear Park aid" followed by "stop safely now". I proceeded to pullover and then the CEL came on and the drive train lost all power. I couldn't Rev the engine. If I put it in Park or reverse the car would not move. Had the car towed to my local dealership who had it for two weeks. Told me a sensor in the tyranny had failed, they had to take the Trans apart to replace it and everything would be fine after that.

Picked up my car and it was fine. 6 weeks later the entire scene happened again just as it did on new years eve except this time after a few hours the car was drivable. I went back to the dealer yesterday and dropped it off and the service tech just called me to tell me it's a bad PCM and with labor it's gonna be an $890 job.

Has this happened to anyone else on here? Is this price ridiculous? Are they taking me for a ride. Some insight from you guys would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The computer modules are not cheap. You could look for a used one and have it installed at an independent shop.

How much mileage is on the car? I would think the PCM should be covered under the 5Y/60,000 mile powertrain warranty if not the 8Y/100,000 mile hybrid warranty.

My 2010 warranty book lists "electronic engine control unit" as being covered in the 5/60K warranty.

The 2015 warranty lists it as "powertrain control module".

I think that's the route I'm gonna go. The module new goes for about 500. I think I'm gonna buy it and do it myself.

My mileage is at 95k right now so if it is covered under the 100k warranty then I'm right at the cusp of it and hope the tech messed up and didn't realize it was covered. I'm on my way there now actually to discuss the car with him. I'll update you guys as to whats going on. Thanks.

The PCM may be hard to find outside of Ford. There may be some software actions required to match the PCM to the car. Can you do that? It's probably out of warranty.

So I went over there and that's what the tech told me... It's out of warranty and I can install it but it has to be programmed by Ford. So I'm beat and gonna have to fork over $900.

Funny this topic should get a bump, from the date I posted it, today is when I got the car back with a final bill of $1047 and 3 weeks car less and with no loaner. Not a happy camper.
