Headlight delay (sometimes on, sometimes not)

Recommended Posts

Just curious- sometimes when I get out of my SEL and lock the doors using the remote, the lights stay on for a minute or so.

Other times, they don't.

How does it decide when to leave them on, and when not to?

do you press the remote lock button before or after closing the door?

in my car the lights stay on if I press the remote lock button with the door open. If I lock the doors after all doors are closed then the lights shut off instantly.

I never press the fob lock button until I'm out, the door is closed and I'm walking away.

Maybe it's just the lights staying on when dark and has nothing to do with the locks....

Hi guys! :D Yes BlackSEL. Your exterior lights will stay on when it is dark for the pre-determined amount of time the system is set for. They will not stay on during daylight hours, as the sensor (on top of the dash) lets the system know it is light out. This feature can be adjusted so that the lights stay on as long as you like, or can be turned off. It is all explained in detail in your Owners Manual.

Also, the locks/alarm can be armed with the doors open by just pressing the lock button on the keyfob once (you do not need to press it twice).

You can press the keyfob button with a door open. When you shut the door, the lights will flash, then the alarm system goes into its "20 second countdown". You do not need to press the keyfob button twice. Press it once and just the lights will flash, press it twice and the lights will flash and the horn will honk. Again, it is all explained in detail in the Owners Manual.

Her is an excerpt from the Owners Manual:

Arming the system

When armed, this system will respond if unauthorized entry is

attempted. When unauthorized entry occurs, the system will flash the

turn signal lamps and will sound the horn.

The system is ready to arm whenever the key is in the 1(LOCK)

position, or is removed from the ignition. Either of the following actions

will prearm the alarm system:

• Press the control on the remote entry transmitter portion of your

Integrated Keyhead Transmitter.

When you press the lock control twice within three seconds on the

remote entry transmitter portion of your IKT, the horn will chirp once to

let you know that all doors, the hood and the trunk are closed. If any of

these are not closed, the horn will chirp twice to warn you that a door,

the hood or the trunk is still open.

Press the driver or passenger interior door lock control while

the door is open, then close the door.

There is a 20 second countdown when any of the above actions occur

before the vehicle becomes armed.

Each door, the hood or the trunk is armed individually, and if any are

open, they must be closed for the system to enter the 20 second

countdown.

The turn signal lamps will flash once when all doors, the hood and the

trunk are closed indicating the vehicle is locked and entering the 20

second countdown.

So press once with a door open, then close the door, and the lights will flash to let you know it is armed. Press the button twice, then close the door, and the lights will flash and the horn will honk once to let you know the system is armed.

This is the way my MKZ system works, and the way my neighbors Fusion (which I helped her purchase) works. I checked.

If your alarm won't activate with just one press (with a door open), there is something wrong with the system and you should have the Dealer look at it.

Hope this information is helpful.

Good luck! :beerchug:
