I need to go to the mountains (potentially snowy) and the manual says "Do not use snow chains or cables on this vehicle as they may cause damage to your vehicle". Is this true? Has anyone tried snow chains or cables?

Having had a vehicle damaged by snow chains (many years ago), I'd take that advice. The problem comes with insufficient wheel well clearance,

There's way more to this issue than wheel well clearance. Check this prior thread.
