Winter tread for 17" rims

Recommended Posts

I know some will shudder as they do not like Goodyear, but I have had excellent service out of their tires ... and the road hazard warranty has saved me a bunch when I've used it. Now for my question ...

I am considering the Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT tires for use on the factory rims for Winter. Has anyone had practical experience with these on the FFH or similar vehicle? The local Goodyear Manager uses them on her Mustang, but that's got a slightly different drivetrain configuration! :)

What I'm looking for is the most brutal Winter conditions you've used them in and anything you didn't particularly care for on them. I have not pulled the trigger ... in fact it appears Tirerack has the same thing for about $100 less than the store - including rebates. So I'm waiting to see if they'll price-match or if I should drop-ship to them! <chuckle>

Any input - pro or con is appreciated. Tire size will be OEM 225/50-17. Tirerack Goodyear Ultra Grip link

They're in the medium range of winter tires. It all depends on your driving habits in winter. Due to your location, they'll be fine. Might be a little noisy on the freeway due to the tire thread in a V-Shape. They're more of a snow tire than an ice tire.

Some exemple of better tires, in case you get a deal on:

-Bridgestone Blizzak

-Toyo Observer GX (Got those on my two cars, nothing to complaint about)

-Michelin X-ice

-Nokian Hakkapellita 8 (probably the best tires of all)

When you say factory, rims are you talking about the rims that came with the car or buying factory steelies with TPMS for it?

I have the regular GY Ultra Grip and very happy with them and they actually have a better price. The have served me very well in the last two Chicago winters.

Not sure if you wanna buy new rims for the summer tires or if you are planning on switching just the rubber twice a year but two complete sets are definitely easier to handle if you have the space to store the unused set.

The FFH runs Verdi Regency rims with factory Michelin tread for non-Winter, so right now the factory 17" rims are tread-less. :) Guess where the GY stuff will be mounted? My Fiesta is the same way ... two rim/tire sets.

This August we bought our 2015 FFH with Michelin Energy Saver M & S P225 / 50 / R17.

We hit our first snow in late September but only for a couple miles over a pass so no real test.

Two weeks ago (mid December) I parked it after a scary eye opener on the highway and will drive our beater till I find winter tires and rims.

The Michelins are AWFUL and do not deserve the M and S label.

They are only a summer tire!

Here in the Northwest Les Schwab dealers are widespread so I would like to buy snow tires from them...suggestions welcome; thanks.
