2015 Ford Fusion Hybrid SE

Recommended Posts

Amazed with the fuel economy on the highway averaging 4.0L per 100km on the highway which is impressive.

Not so happy with the economy in the city, is there anything I Can do to change the settings in the vehicle to be able to get better economy in the city? Or could it be due to the small battery causing issues which isn't allowing my vehicle to get the optimum fuel economy?

Let me know what you guys think?

Welcome to the forum!

For city driving, It's all about how you manage the gaz pedal. Let's say you accelerate to your cruising speed (let say 55 km/h), engage the gaz engine up to 40-45 km/h, then release the pedal so you switch to electric mode. This way, your battery will have more charge and you'll drive longer in EV mode. Release the pedal and re-engage and soon as you feel that the car doesn't need the gaz engine. If possible, try to brake slowly to get maximum brake regen.

Starting from a stop in EV only will kill your MPG as it drains the battery too rapidly. Also, turn off your EV+, I get better MPG since i've done it.

Man, how do you get that on the highway? I typically average close to 6.0 - I set the eco cruise control (it's not adaptive) to the posted speed limit and don't blast the A/C too much and never use heating if I can help it. Still can't go below 5.7.

I have gotten 4.0 or lower in the city and suburbs. Just drive like a grandma and brake smoothly - aim to score over 90% on the regen brake "game" as often as you can.

Note that in horrendous city traffic, where it's more like 90% stop and 10% go, rather than stop-and-go, your fuel economy will be much worse than normal because once the battery drains the engine will begin revving loudly, especially once you let off the brake to move a few meters. If the traffic is evenly balancing the "stop" with the "go" that's your best chance of getting that 4.0.

Adaptive cruise wasn't available or you didn't opt for it on the car? I cannot figure out how in the heck I ever drove without the adaptive part. Just highway cruising, I set it to 4 seconds gap and forget it ... knowing it'll kick off at 25 or so if it gets that low.

I agree on holding to posted limits for the most part. Depending on the roads I might go to +5 MPH over limit but that's about it. Agree on the A/C. When we had the hot spell here (that never seemed to end) I'd use A/C to cool interior with the cooled seats on, then shut off the cabin air. Worked quite nicely if you have the cooled seat option.

Bought a pre-owned car that didn't come with it :( I have driven other cars with adaptive cruise and I now know that my next car will definitely have it assuming I can afford a brand new one.

Adaptive cruise does help improve fuel economy from what I've heard as the auto-braking is smoother and less wasteful than the human touch.

I find that I can get much better gas mileage buy overriding the ACC. It will wait too long to start braking for traffic in front of you since it can't see as far as the human eye can to anticipate traffic patterns. It also cannot anticipate rolling hills on the freeway to know how to handle them most efficiently. The only time I find it of value is for accelerating back up to speed once you're moving past a bottleneck. But that's a discussion for the ACC thread, not here...

Also Scott, what sort of traffic conditions are giving you these less-than-ideal city figures? When I drove my car off the lot in Toronto, my fuel consumption was reading 8-9 L/100 km in chronic congestion. After the initial "break in period" I rarely go over 6.5 in the city.
