From my time spent on the different Ford Flex Forum's (I had one) there is a lot of info out there about those EB engines and Direct Injection.

You can see some of the EB discussion on YouTube, this particular Ford Tech is pretty sharp, he has a lot of Ford related video other than the ones I linked to. You can also do an internet search using 'EcoBoost' and see what is being said - some good, some not. Ford sure has made a lot of those engines though and the newest generation are pretty good.

This article seems to suggest that it is not entirely a marketing scheme.

The size of an engine is not really the measure of it's power anymore. This EcoBoost is developing 2 hp. per cubic inch of displacement. My FFH is about 1. Top fuel dragsters develop about 20 but they only last a few seconds. If the engine is built properly to withstand the higher pressures of supercharging, it should be OK. I'd like to see how these turbos hold up after 15 years. They turn at up to 230,000 rpm !
